What laptop to buy

If power usage control is important then I recommend the 'T' and 'X' series thinkpads. Their chipsets tend to be developed linearly one from the other so the feature control is somewhat consistent. There is also a community of users, see thinkwiki.org who follow the development and changes. I would think that certain model Dells would also have a following and a consistent feature set.

Download via dvd?

Yes you can download files onto your windows pc, burn a cd or dvd, then mount that on your Linux machine. I suggest using iso9660 with long filename as the cd format Or much easier, download to a usb stick on the windows machine, move the usb stick to the linux machine Recent Linux systems have no problem with fat32 or ntfs formated usb keys, so it should run smoothly. Now, why would the Linux machine be slower than the windows one? is it...

Ok, Since there is no problem on booting with F12 DVD I gave a shot and to my surprise it gives me a kernel panic Then I disabled the ACPI and it continued till I disk partitioning. I'm using kubuntu right now and I use unallocated partition for F12 cause I don't want to loose any of my data due to this. I have enough space to install another distro (20GB) but when I select free space and define / with 8GB it says not enough...

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't ruled out a thermal problem, but it's not high on my list at the moment. The laptop can be booted to XP Pro so I might leave it running something in that for a while to see what happens.

Dear Jbkt23 I have attached "lspci -v" output file for your reference. The laptop is Acer Aspire One D150-0Bk. Actually the problem does not seem to exist anymore. I changed the following settings in power manager : When laptop lid is closed : Blank Screen for both AC power and battery power and the made the setting default. It just worked. I've read this which describes why we're screwed in the world of Intel GMA 500 graphics on linux, but that post is a few months old and there doesn't appear to be much verification if there is support for this graphics chipset yet or not. I was hoping someone might be able to provide me some info on if they have it functioning on Fedora 11.
I did read somewhere that the fbdev will atleast ...

You should probably provide some additional information/requirements, e.g.
- what do you want to spend
- what do you want to use the system for
- how long do you want to be able to run on batteries
- do you want to use the device only indoors or also outdoors

Hello NotoriousREV
Yes, it's a problem with KDE.
Personally, I do this:
Quote:
Copythe file:
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-synapt ics.fdi
into "/etc/hal/fdi/policy:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

Whether you need swap or not mostly depends on how much RAM you have, not how new or old your machine is. Additionally, some power management features depend on swap to store data in it, e.g. for suspend/hibernate.
With respect to your second problem, you could try to use nomodeset on the kernel line. Maybe kernel mode setting doesn't work as expected. There are additional suggestions in the ...

Why two screens?
Did it hang at the apic line when shutting down?
There is a kernel line in /etc/grub.conf to disable that apic, I believe.

So when you switch in AC power, I'm assuming you mean plug in the power cord. Not knowing whether you did check the Power Manager settings that would be the first place to go. It is in:
System>Preferences>System>Power Manager or System>Preferences>Power Manager.
Acer Aspire is a pretty popular so I would search with that in the terms along with the term power manager or suspend or sleep....

I can't boot a live CD on my HP DV9727CL laptop, either. I get a blank blue screen where my cursor will move around and my volume control will work, but nothing else. Fedora 11 worked fine as does the latest Mandriva. I'd prefer Fedora but this has me stumped. Anyone have any ideas?

I believe there is a setting you can make to hear the sound on the speaker:
click on System / Preferences / advanced volume control
Look at the attached screen-shot, especially what I have underlined in red

My laptop had something similar, but on Fedora 11.
When powering back on it complained of the system's temperature.
I used the following command in a shell to monitor the temperature:
watch -d - n 60 acpitool
then i determined I had to clean the laptop's blower

You haven't identified what brand and the particular hardware. There has been some work done on Thinkpads to control fans better. Still not as good as the fan management on MS or Mac. Did you do any configuration other than install F11 when it worked with lower fan usage. The ACPI kernel module(s) are what enable the management. There are several different modules that can be installed depending ...
