How else are the poor banks going to make money, and pay bonuses, if they can't charge the customer??? You think that's how they make their money? No, that comes from investing our money in high-return (and high-risk) investment markets, paying us feck-all interest and keeping the rest. They rip us off with fees just for the hell of it, as far as I can tell.
