You will have to get the transfer case out of the way and then there are 6 bolts that hold the extension housing on. Undo those then tap it with a rubber mallet and it should fall off. You are going to need about 6in clearance behind it to drop it because it has to clear the output shaft. Super easy job with the t-case out of the way. Darrin

The best bet would be to use a Dodge SRT 10 T56 and change the input shaft to the Ford 10 spline and use the Ford Bellhousing. Get a short throw shifter and weld a foot or two of rebar to it to lengthen the shift lever. You will also need the pedal assy from a Manual F-150 and the Cobra hydraulics ect.... The Cobra T-56 will stand 450 ft/lbs but the Dodge is closer to 600. Don't forget the tranny delete in the PCM. Driveshaft length and...

Yeah I don't know what to do at ths point. Mdcover has a monsterbox tranny for sale that I'm considering buying but I'm not sure if it will hold up to what I want out of my truck. I'm leaning towards a Modmax 1000hp short block and a custom Spyder single turbo kit pushed to like 25-30 psi eventually to reach close to the limits of the block. It's either that or a Paschal billet 6.4L stroker kit in a bored and sleeved...

Body Lift owners - Can I do this?
Published (2009-11-23 03:35:00)
Thank you all.... good advice. Was not aware that there is a 2" lift and that the rear bumper did not get the treatment. What did not get conveyed above was that I only want to run 33" tires for about 2-3 months a year, the rest of the time running stock. Reason being is the difference in power. I have raced an identical truck as mine with 33's on and pulled him when I was stock and he had a Gryphon on custom tune. That...

Transfer case leak?? HELP?
Published (2009-11-23 11:51:00)
I too have noticed a slight transmission fluid leak coming from my truck. At first I thought it may have been leaking from the transfer case itself, but when I crawled up and looked closer it appeared to be starting from a hose that connects from the transmission to the transfer case. I'm fairly ignorant as to how these things operate, but I didn't know if the transfer case shared fluid from the tranny. If so, I'm guessing it...

Have you checked the fluid level? Do you see any leaks? Slave leaks will cause fluid to drip out the bottom of the bell housing, master leaks will leak fluid in the cab, behind the mat/carpet where the clutch pushrod goes through the firewall. It's MOST likely the slave cylinder, but it COULD also be the master cylinder or something else internal in the clutch assembly. If it's the slave...

Sounds like TC shudder to me. When was the last time you changed the fluid? Old fluid can cause the shudder because its lost its friction modifiers. Could also be the solenoid that controls TC lock/unlock. That solenoid is an easy fix too, its right under the pan on the valve body. I would guess its either one of those, but if its not then your TC is prob on it's way out. - ...

The only difference between the 4x4 and 2wd 4r70w's is the output shaft, and the tail housing. For the internals it doesn't matter if its 2wd or 4x4. As for the 97 rebuild kit working on a 94, for the most part the parts will work, but there are some differences. For example, I believe the 97 and older 4r70w's used a mechanical diode instead of the older one way clutch. In my opinion...

It's supposed to be there. Ford uses it to plug the dipstick hole in the tranny before the dipstick gets installed. When the dipstick tube is installed, it falls on the bottom of the transmission pan. They all have one if the pan has never been off.

Put your VIN in here: http://www.ford.com/owner-services/c...ll-informat ion See if there are any outstanding recalls. I dunno about the shift cable, but I'd bet you need the cruise control recall, and that one is CRITICAL, it's a fire hazard whether you use cruise or not.

hey bud, the 5.4 lightning engine puts out impressive torque even just off idle. Failures derive from many different realms, some are hard part failures meaning stub shafts or gear sets are not hard enough to take the loads. some from slipping (heat) burning up clutches, or shocks taking a toll overall. I talked some with my builder (Darrin Burch on these forums) about my application, he shared ...

You may potentially be feeling what is called a "low grade" misfire. If you opt to change the plugs, best bet is Motorcraft, then NGK / Denso. There is more complaints with bosch and champion with continuing to have this low grade misfire issue. also remember to use dielectic compound on the boots too, just for the better.

Hey guys, I have a '97 F-150 Lariat... this truck has been just incredible. It's just about to roll over 250,000 miles and the only thing i've had to replace has been a condenser for the a/c. My 2000 F150Scab 5.4L 4x4 had a 4R70W. If you can barely hear it, I wouldn't worry too much. If it's serious, it will get worse. My truck makes a little whining noise too and I don't worry about it. Get the transmission code off the door sticker and look it up. Google for Ford transmission codes. That code will tell you what it came with.
