Sounds like a pretty cool product... I've been playing for over 14 years now, and one of the toughest things I found is to learn to 'visualize' the notes on the fretboard for different scales and arpeggio's and such. When you say you tried the sliders, did you check that your soundcard is the one chosen (I found that sometimes using "Windows default" doesn't work). If you run dxdiag, does it find anything? hi there, try tunebite, it can extract the audio from a video while converting. and the quality of files is great, also it works with high speed. It's worth trying

Buy a new pair, unless you have experience soldering wires that small together. (which I assume you don't, or you would have done it already.) Twisting the wires together should work, but only if you strip the insulation off the wires before doing so. (then of course get something around them so the wires don't become corroded.)
