I have the ARB awning (same as camping lab) and i have a Fiamma F35. If i had to choose one over the other, i'd go with Fiamma. The quality is much higher and it locks up in a durable aluminum case. The actual awning material is the same as you would find on an RV/motorhome.

FoxWing by OZ, I don't have one at the moment, but have gotten play with them at SEMA and other event's, so I can't speak for the longevity but I can say that is the best bang for the buck, especially for coverage. I have a Fiamma, and will be trading for one. Happy Holidays Advrider

Yeah, you should. And get those front and rear bumpers built, build the camper conversion interior, throw a solid axle under the front... Better do it now before you're married with kids...

U-Joint, Yes needs to be AL. and I have been told that it can hold a max of 200#'s if balanced. I think 175 would be pushing it, although I have had close to that up top with no problem. Have to be aware when raising and lowering the top. I suggest to all you manually help it along going up/down. Kcowyo, You are point on my friend. I have been visiting the Cal coast all my life, from the trunk of a car to well, now this SMB. The WR trail...

What a totally cooool conversion! You had me looking at used ambulance sites. If only I had the skills to do a conversion. Some of these used ambulances are really good deals.

I would rather not type "Disabled Explorers Sportsmobile 4wd Wheelchair Accessible Van" over and over so let's just be friends and call it the DE SMB WAV and that will be much easier
We are working on a new project vehicle and thought it would be interesting to document the process and our thoughts behind the choices we make.
Up until recently this was the Disabled Explorers demo...

There is a wealth of information at www.sportsmobileforum.com regarding the E series as most of the SMB conversions are Ford.
My 04' extended body E-350 6.0l diesel SMB gets about 15mpg average. I have 4:10's gears and 315" tires.

I have the same challenge in front of me with my very young children, but we have no aspirations of going south of the border (north of the Red River, maybe!). The answer for us is a Suburban and a tent. There are some snazzy tents out there these days if you don't have to have expedition-bling or hard sides on your abode.

I've had both. I had a Fiamma F45Ti and Camping Lab.
Pros: Fiamma
-Easy to deploy
-covers a large area
Cons:
-Price
-Weight
-Parts very hard to get.
Pros:Camping Lab
-Price (great price to what you are getting)
- Light weight
Cons:
-Covers a small area
Both are well constructed and seem durable. Good luck with your decision.

Are the Detroit diesels just junk or??? How about this one?
https://www.baycitymotors.net/
Look for the bright green diesel van. It doesn't list the mileage, I will call tomorrow. Also, with a rig like this, ex ambulance, I am sure besides the miles it sat and idled for a long time. Does the idle time take a toll on these engines?

Decided it's more of a project that I want to get into and the owner is a flake. It's still sitting there but the owner hasn't returned any calls, only been able to talk to him once in the last month. If anyone else is interested it's a 1994 E350 4wd cargo van, 237k, 7.3?liter gas, auto. 5k.
Transfer case is bad, no front driveshaft, rear mainseal leaks, another oil leak up front somewhere, ...

Thanks for the link.
The van under modification is a windowless IVECO 50C13 2.8TD. It's about the same size as the high-top Sprinter 3500 imported to USA. The van is a work model, and lacks windows or interior fittings in the van.
Now that Fiat has a controlling interest in Chrysler, IVECO vans may well appear in Dodge showrooms in a couple of years.

Don't know much about them.... And as far as I know, there is no aftermarket support, so everything would have to be fabricated. I don't think any Ford parts will work, but anything is possible if you have the tools & $$$$$$!!!!!!!
