Well, I'd say that the fellow is a bit bonkers or charmingly eccentric ~ depending on your point of view. LOL! What do you envisage from the car? These cars had an Audi based engine that was tweaked to produce in later incarnations 125 odd hp. They are by n means rapid. They do have excellent road manners, however and a very slippery shape. Which mechanics are doing the warning? How much do they actually know about Porsches? Questions their motives for such a blanket generalisation. How much you get burned depends on so many factors. ..the condition of the car you buy, the previous owners service activity, where you take it to get work done, modifications... Well maintained 911's won't necessarily cost more to maintain...

the three places i know of are RJP Motorsport, Ktec, and Swan Porsche. my car goes to RJP so i'll be reccommending them. He's got his name on some of the best porsches in Perth.

If its a second car, a 993 TT. If its a daily and your main (only car) a 996 TT. The 993 will always hold its value more than the 996, its a collectors car, there are limited numbers of them in Australia compared with the 996s and its an enthusiasts car. Turbos are expensive to maintain, a 996 TT runs about 2-3 times the cost of an E46 M3. Not sure on the 993s I've never bothered ...
