Tar Spots
Published (2009-12-05 11:56:00)
Thanks, Dan. Is there a detailing products supply place you'd recommend down here or should I hit the internet? Incidentally, what's your thoughts on the WD40 trick? I know you'd say the proper tar remover is the best, but being oil(fish?) based, is the WD40 going to be good enough, without taking off the wax, as an interim measure until I get a proper detailing or should I steer clear altogether? And... not knowing what the...

Dan can answer with most authority on the subject, without doubt, but I'll say this, anything you use has to dissolve the tar. Tar is a thick oil based product. Anything dissolving tar is going to remove wax as well. Dan already alluded to that. Clay bar may remove it without causing any harm at all. Never tried it.

A good quality tar remover will sort it mate. Autoglym intensive tar remover is great. Put some in a sprayer and spray it on. Let it sit for a minute or so and you will see the tar begin to dissolve. Then grab a microfibe that has some intensive tar on it and gently wipe over the area. I should all just wipe off. If they are stubborn then you may need to repeat the process. Once omplete wash the car again. You will need to rewax the area as...

You know what, Mum's 520i had lots of tar spots on it after a recent trip into the countryside. We gave it a wash over at my Nan's, but had nothing to remove the tar. Looking around the place, I spotted some Preen.... Works. Like. A. Charm! I also read that WD40 works a treat, too. P

I am sure others will disagree here but, I find the Meguiars Trim Detailer works well on my external black trims. Last a while and is easy to put on. It is in a smaller black bottle. Just wipe on, leave it for a few minutes and wipe off the excess.

i just use the same bucket and detergent from washing the car, I do the wheels last with a separate microfibre. Might need some bug off or something like that if the brake dust is baked on.

There are always things going on in the CCP office and one of the biggest projects has been some instructional video's showing 'how to' guides for various detailing steps. There is a redesign of the hints and tips section of our site underway and part of that will be a complete series of educational videos. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and in this day and age a ...
