"Mad Men" themed...
Published (2009-12-27 00:54:00)
Hello... Each year at New Year's Eve, we host a themed dinner party for a group of friends (just under 20 in total). This year's theme is "Mad Men" (late 50s to early 60s) and while we've got the decoration and outfits all in mind, the menu is a bit challenging with the clock ticking down. I've spent forever trying to find recipes from that time that are not too horrifying (ie things that are not...

Buzz box comment
Published (2009-12-27 13:53:00)
I'm a long-time fan of buzz box on this site.  However, I've recently been troubled by the fact that recipes are appearing there apparently because of repeated identical posts from the same reviewer.  For example, as of today, 12/27/09, Oven-Roasted Dungeness Crab appears on buzz box with 32 identical four-fork reviews posted 12/24.  Kale with Garlic and Bacon appears on buzz box with 26...

Old Gourmet Recipe from the...

Back in the 1980's, Gourmet published a fantastic recipe.  It was called, I think, American Cafe Chili, from a restaurant in Kansas City. Many moves later, I cannot find my copy.   Anybody got a copy?

Steak & kidney pie
Published (2009-12-28 11:42:00)
Being Irish and German in my antecedents, I don't know why traditional English cuisine holds such a high place in my holiday menus, but it does and thus the Steak and Kidney Pie. I saw a nice pack of veal kidneys at the market a couple of weeks ago, and that was the final push to make this dish. Used a commercial pre-made deep dish pie crust. Hey pre-cook this while not getting involved in anything else, otherwise 9, then 15, then 20...

I have lost my recipe for enchilada/ tamale casserole.  Fortunately, I have the page that I tore out with the picture of the dish and the date of the publication.  The recipe is from Gourmet, November 1989 (can't believe that was 20 years ago).  The casserole contained ground beef, corn tortillas, sour cream, tomatoes/ salsa, and cheese.  It was topped with cheese and black olives and a ring of corn...

Recipe help?
Published (2009-12-29 22:42:00)
A friend of mine and I are throwing a New Year's party and we're having trouble finding the right kind of recipes for some munchies to make. We want to stick with hors d'oeuvres/appetizers/tapas, since it's a casual party; we've also got bread, brownies and deviled eggs covered as Things To Make. What we're really looking for is some fairly simple recipes that don't involve expensive ingredients that can be...
