"we" were answering the question "What do the French think of the Swiss French accent?", not "which regional French-French accent do you have?". I think you misunderstood my thought. I think that the accent of the Neuchâtelois is closer to Dijon than to Geneva, and that the one of Geneva is closer to the one of...

Quote: Sky Lou, maybe you would benefit for conversation classes in French ? I do hope you will take this kindly, but I don't really believe that people don't understand you in French because of your accent, but because of the structure of your sentences. May I guess that you are most probably fluent in a latin language such as Italian or Spanish ? Swiss French or French French are very close, there are just a few region specific...

Quote: Rangatiranui I disagree on both counts. For example, a Swiss might say: "Das Tönt gut" if they were speaking Schrift G (Written) I disagree. Schriftdeutsch is standard German. "Das tönt gut" is not correct German in Switzerland nor Germany. That's just a poor Swiss who can't speak High German nor Standard German nor Schriftdeutsch.

We all know that there is US-English, UK-English, AUS ..... Similarly, the Swiss use simpler words and constructs, in their written version, than the Germans. Some examples: Lift (CH) but Aufzug/Fahrstuhl (DE) Tram (CH) but Strassenbahn (DE) Velo (CH) but Fahrrad (DE) Telefon (CH) but Fernsprecher (DE) Fax (CH) but Fernschreiber (DE)

I had to look for berclure and could only find it in a french -swiss french dictionary for Haricot vert.. 'une grande berclure, pouète comme un épouvantial à moineaux' .so i presume it means she was as ugly as a scarecrow ? Or would you say something else?

You can find people who live in Basel using the member search function , specifying the spoken language(s) in the two native and foreign language fields. Not everybody fills in that information in their profile ( guilty as charged), but a sufficient number do so that you should be able to find some people.
I also advise you to post a tandem request in this thread . ...

Hi Asterisk,
I'd like to exchange English for German. It's a great idea that we could have fun at the same time. Where can we meet?

There's quite a bit of a difference...more of a difference between SG and HG than Spanish and Portuguese, or so I'm told.
High German (Hoch Deutsch) is the official language and here it is spoken in the schools so kids start learning it at about 5 or 6, however the Swiss tend to make mistakes because it's not generally spoken on the street. Unless you speak damn good HG, if you ask a Swiss ...

Mel, why are you driving to Vevey? There's a Migros school in the Flon. I'd be interested in taking a class in Lausanne if I could find some kindred spirit/s. I ran into the same issue you did at Inlingua--I was the only person who signed up.
