( There have been a lot of relevant threads, especially of late, for instance thread731-254534: Can't find a job-unemployed for over 7 months seems very relevant. Most folks decry online applications of the various sorts, and certainly they seem shall we say inefficient. However, I got my current job from having my resume on monster or career builder or one of those, it got spotted by a job-shop recruiter and I started...

( Stringmaker: I would be inclined to try GE \(General Electric\) or any of the centrifugal compressor / turbine packagers out of the yellow pages. After that, the major module fabricators who might start getting busy before others would include Propak \(Airdrie\) or Toromont \(Calgary\). The last rotating equipment-related FEA work that I was involved with was with National Process Equipment based out of...

I just got of the phone with a recruiter, and the convinced my to go back to my chronological resume as opposed to my skills based/functional resume. Here's why: Recruiters are spreading themselves over more industries than what they are used to. Thus, they don't care about your skills so much as can, or rather have, you done what the job description is looking for. Also,...

Kenat...excellent points about the length of the CV. As long as it is factual and well-written, I don't care how long it is...also, checking the details...it's like working with an attorney. If you add up their billable time, a 40 year old attorney would have to be at least 70!

( Latest update: They agreed to the extra money :\) So, I wont be LOSING money, but the extra I was making will be gone. However, as my wife \(and kids\) put it, "You mean you'll come home HAPYY?!? Yeah!!!" To me, that's worth it :\) Anyway, thanks to all for your suggestions! This is exactly why I needed the Engineering viewpoint. Thank you. , )

( I feel for you. I was unemployed for 7 months this year, after a move from California to Florida to care for my father. I flooded the usual online sources with my resume without success, then at the 5-month mark, I broke down and started to personally visit temp agencies \(like Aerotek\) and local companies. I also visited a couple rapid prototyping companies asking them about their ...

( Stringmaker: The market here is fairly barren in all sectors. You might try the packagers of equipment similar to what you are already working on \( gas turbine packagers or rotating equipment packagers\). Still an "O&G" slant but one level removed from the run of the mill stuff. About a year ago, people were hiring anything bipedal that had a pulse. Now, both Calgary and Edmonton are ...

I am surprised that the recruiters did not offer any advice. I would not leave anything out, I might organize it as a functional resume (by roles and responsibilities) rather than a historical resume. Many recruiting firms offer a free service helping you to improve your resume. They are the 'experts', so I would use them.

( A little more info might help us in general. How long were you there, how long have you been gone? Were these conflicts with the owner ethical in nature, or did you guys just not get along? I was asked to return to a previous company after being gone for 2yrs. The ball is in your court, and I think since your company is so small maybe more so. Be fair to yourself, stick to your guns, ...

I think you need to have your credentials evaluated by the state licensing board in the state you're trying to take the exam. They're not too fast in my sate, so I'd get the ball rolling asap!

( Too many pages will find it in the circular file before it is read. I am guessing you have a chronological CV. Try rewriting it as a functional CV, just listing the companies and then your functions in a separate section. , )

( It will probably depend on what if any written policies and or contract you/the technicians have. What do they say about remuneration for such things. Are they required to work for the company for a certain amount of time else pay it back or something? It may not seem fair that technicians get their exams paid for while Engineers don't, but the law isn't usually about what's fair. Also, ...

( I can agree with most of what you say, but there is a lot of structural work out there in the bridge end of structures, a separate specialty of the structural field itself. However, there are also a lot of applicatants. Diversification never hurts one for employment possibilities though. , )
