The RFP is active; I'm getting ready to respond to it and will ask for clarification. Thank you so much.

Regardless, during part of the initial testing, sulfur content as well as a couple other methods have been extremely reliable for us to determine prior to demo stage whether a house contains Chinese drywall or not. So yes, there are other means of testing than relying on just a sulfur test. I have yet to tear a house down where the testing was wrong and Chinese drywall was not present in the house.

How sad. Consumer protection becomes a tool to en-rich the lawyers. But without them, there won't be justice done.

Green Roof Model Techniques

Peter, Thanks for the links. We are in the process of trying to understand how the green roofs and porous pavement type facilities can meet the latest LEED requirements as well as provide proper flood management within the site limits. And to top it off get the local and state reviewing agencies to buy off on it. To date they have not be up front with reviewing these items so the leg work will rest on the developer's consultants to...

yeah the area holds water due to the concrete that has settled, but we are also looking to put another drain in to help this problem. There is only one drain for about a football sized lot.

Usually, the lawyers take the "shotgun" approach and sue everyone they can think of. Have the material suppliers been joined? Are there class actions?

This is not a mechanical engineering problem. It is a product liability problem. In hot and wet environments, chinese made drywall may off gas into hydrogen sulfide, carbon disulfide, and carbonyl sulfide and contaminate a structure's air supply. The first step is to determine if you have a problem. Analytical testing laboratories have now come up with a low cost ($100) test method to determine if you have problem drywall: h ttp://www....

The only economy I have seen in traffic regulation is to see those working at it being financed by tickets, be now intelligent traffic lights or officers. It can be done without horizontal joints. It depends on your specific configuration and formwork design

smwoe - Are you a registered engineer (forensic or similar)or an "ambulance chaser"? More detailed, "uncloaked" information would give more responses and specific replies. Dick

my interpretation is that the freeboard in a CB is the vertical distance from the calculated water surface in the catch basin to the lip of the gutter or to the grate.

If you aren't sure about it, get a senior engineer to review. If you don't have one available, you may have to retain a consultant to peer review your method, calculations and results. If your firm does this work an a regular basis, then one of your senior engineers should have provided you some guidance to begin with. J

I'm not familiar with the soil, but if it is highly plastic, then the slab could have dessicated and caused shrinkage. Jointing is a problem with water; if left open you can get something called 'pumping' in these locales. The saturated soil has a reduced shear capacity, hence, a reduced bearing capacity. How thick is the slab; it might be underdesigned for the applied loadings. Dik

I would think that covering the area, even with tarps, would retain some ground heat & prevent the "crust" from forming. With that thick of a pour, you're probably right that a thin frozen layer (say less than 1/4") would thaw very quickly and not be a concern. Not sure where to draw the line on frozen depth, as the greater the depth, the more possible loosening/loss of compaction and slower ...

I am not sure what you have planned, but a siphon will work hydraulically with convection currects. For example, a frequent problem on hot water supplies is cold water when you turn the tap on. One technique used on residential hot water plumbing systems is to put a loop on the system. You basically set up a convection current so that the water in the loop stays hot at all the times.
