1/4% Tax on all stock trades...

Quote from jprad: Geither is nothing more than a mouthpiece. If the White House was seriously considering a transaction tax he would have never made any comments against it. Once any legislation hits the house floor and we see what entities are exempt it will be all too easy for the GAO to re-calculate the proposed tax income. Once it's known how much less the tax would generate then the opposition can leverage the impact of the tax...

Felix Salmon on the trader tax http://blogs.reuters.com/felix-salm...inst-liquidity/ So yes, let?s throw some sand into the wheels of the repo market, either through a Tobin tax or through the Miller-Moore amendment or both. Because liquidity is not ever and always a good thing.

1/4% Tax on all stock trades...
Published (2009-11-26 17:55:00)
Quote from DirkDigler: I've seen references to trades of less than $100K being exempt from this tax. However it's only been in the comment sections various places. Has anyone seen anything even close to "authoritative" like this? If true that really changes the picture in my mind... The $100k was discussed not per trade, but total trades for the year. Since the bill is still being worked on, nothing is final.

Quote from zdreg: let's see how many people respond to my previous suggestion. instead of writing dribble about leaving the country and trading binary options. write to people who have influence in these matters. "write detailed emails explaining with facts and numbers how a transaction tax would put u out of business. Mark A. Credit Vs Debit Cards
Published (2009-11-25 04:19:00)
Quote from u21c3f6: They forgot about the merchandise/cash-back that many credit cards offer. Joe. Yeah which is nice. I wonder how long it will last. I pay my credit cards in full but I get #1 Free 30 day loan #2 cashback. #3 firewall against my actual assets. I just got 250 dollars credited to my creditcard. But I am probably the customer they do not want. I think the days of the free ride and then some will be coming to an end though. (no...

Ironic that the competition for low transaction commission fees that got rid of 50-100 bucks each way expenses, the invention of the net allowing regular means people to play the market, that the big boy playa's never liked, is facing a turn back the clock moment with this tax, as they planned it would. Look, they use dark pools to gain edges, now this unholy alliance with Washington will allow them to even fool the general public into...

Quote from gerry875: [B]how would they justify an exemption for those few big players? I don't know how they justify it, but here's one recent example. Defazio's attempt earlier in the year to punish evil energy speculators (HR 3379) has the following exemption: ?(c) Exception for Commercial Traders- The tax imposed by this section shall not apply to any transaction if-- ?(1) either party to the transaction is-- ?(A) classified...

Dubai shock after debt...
Published (2009-11-26 18:06:00)
Quote from Martinghoul: Dubai doesn't have those things. Abu Dhabi does and they might lend money to Dubai, for the right price. It's all about face. Dubai cousins losing face is OK, but the whole region - no way. So, as Nakheel goes down, Abu Dhabi will make sure Dubai is properly humiliated before bailing them out. That's my expectation... He, he. I don?t expect the region to gow down. But sovereign CDS traders had their fun...

Its amazing how it took a Supreme Court to allow WMT to exercise a basic corporate action such as closing down a store. If the store was highly profitable they would never had done that, so the workers have nothing to complain about

I may not be that aggressive in shorting but I see no compelling reason to be long.
Downisde at this stage greater than upside.
I suggest people with net positive wealth at least start moving into cash, even if it yields nothing.
People with debt should repay them and not be lured into the false belief that debt doesn't matter, just because our governments think so.

While I agree with the congressman, its useless to call and tap him on the back. They don't care much about people not in their constituency. Better yet, call your own congressman and tell him to grow a pair like Brady or be voted out.

It?s not clear he?s going anywhere but if Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner were to lose his job, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon is emerging as a potential replacement, the New York Post reported.
A number of policy makers have begun mentioning Dimon as a successor to Geithner, who has come under new attacks over his handling of the U.S. economy and ties ...
