Quote from athlonmank8: 200 plus to be exact. Quite honestly if that's a questio you have to ask I might look for a new hobby. Dubai. Yeah, just saw the Dubai news. I was away from the computer most of the day yesterday and today, and when I came back the first thing I noticed was the Dow Futures. Not until after that post did I actually check the news.

Long term value investing
Published (2009-11-25 03:40:00)
Since we're mentioning Ben Graham, it should be noted that his definition of the "intrinsic value" of an equity position is the discounted value of the future dividends (or other disbursements). By that definition, the intrinsic value of most modern common stock is nearly or exactly zero. So he would probably have agreed with most of what I've said. Too many people think "value investing" is buying stock and...

I don't really have an opinion, but I tend to be a bit skeptical about stock price data going back to the 19th century. The basic problem I have with long-term investing is that by the time you have usable feedback, you're dead.

Quote from KINGOFSHORTS: I do not see the point of owning non dividend paying stock. That is like owning a farm and having to sell parts of your farm every year until you run out of farmland to sell. To me dividend paying stock is the equivalent of buying a farm that produces food that is sold and the proceeds could be used to reinvest in more acreage (ie dividend reinvest, more stocks) or to be spend as cash instead. I agree long term...

Quote from Debaser82: VW has been on a huge slump as of late. You think it's a buy at some point? Cheers. Let me answer this way : http://www.acea.be/index.php/news/n..._112_in_october That?s all pre "scrap bonus". Also, some large investors protesting against Porsche takeover - claiming too expensive. Yesterday Martin Winterkorn entered the board. Should be positive in the long run. He?s an excellent entrepreneur....

Quote from rwk: The basic problem I have with long-term investing is that by the time you have usable feedback, you're dead. In my experience, all deep value investments I have ever done have resolved the price discount within 2-3 years at most. The longest I had to wait was from September 2001 to late 2003/early 2004. In most cases I was collecting nice fat dividends while I waited. If your life expectancy is less than 2-3 years, then...

I like the idea of buying and holding for a while, but it's certainly a risk. the big question-mark for me is the iPhone. A lot of RIMM's money comes from corporate use of blackberrys... the question is will that market share increase, or will companies start using the iPhone for their business wireless phones? I use a blackberry curve and I love it. RIMM recently acquired a ...
