Thank God we have websites like John William's Shadowstats ( http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data ) to remind us we've actually been in one constant, giant recession since 1987! Now THAT is more credible than any non-sense the government fudges in their weekly releases?

Quote from jprad: 25 years ago the FACT (at the time) was that Japan was going to kick the US' ass. How'd that turn out? Umm, they did. I'll tell you how that turned out. Toyota, Nissan, and Honda took marketshare away from our big three. GM and Chrysler went BANKRUPT. FRIGGIN BANKRUPT. Cash for Clunkers showed our desperation to keep them somewhat afloat. The issue with Japan however, is that it is an aging population with...

There hasn't been any default yet... Definitely not a sovereign one, and not even a corp one thus far. The FT has been talking about the Dubai issue quite a bit recently. See here, for example: http://ftalphaville.ft.com/blog/200...i-world-really/

At approximately $4,000 per ounce Gold becomes a real currency because the high price solves the limited supply issue. The higher it goes above $4,000 the less and less you need of it to conduct a transaction.

Nothing wrong per say of being 5-10% underwater right now if you have no intentions of going anywhere...except you just can't pull anything out anymore or refi. Staying in the home for 10-15 years and able to pay OK, well fine. You just leave yourself open to that "black swan" that suddenly puts you in a major bind.

Great story. For whatever reason, most financial institutions have no desire or need to negotiate in good faith w/ debtors who are in trouble.
