You could get them to draw a graph to show it? You can use F = GMm/r 2 to work out the sizes between the moon and earth. Ask them why zero isn't in the middle and to describe the relationships in detail.

if you are doing the egg thing then get  cans of regular and diet coke. Diet floats in water the regular can will sink due to the added mass of sugar dissolved in the coke.   Whatever you decide to do test it out first!

mike ryan: It could well be worth blowing the whole of the dept budget for the next thousand years but on the down side, think of the risk assessment paperwork!   You see, this is just the problem. Risk assessments stifling real scientific enquiry! Pffft.

Have you tried asking staff where they think the problem lies? As the advisor will probably ask you what you think your strengths and weaknesses are. Is there a lack of resources? Teacher confidence/knowledge? Do pupils lack skills in Sc1? vocabulary? reasoning skills? Do you have an analysis from last year's year 6 SATs as that may be revealing. I found that resources were my first port of call as they had not been changed or organised...

Depending on the ability. You could just keep it at floating and sinking or if they are bright you could do eureka cans and displacement. Really really bright and ask for the materials blocks and do some density calculations, find the volume and density of an irregular shaped object by weighing it in air and water. Why do hot air balloons float, why do steel ships float. Hope this ...

Not being funny but at least you've got a post to apply for. I currently run GCSE, AS and A2 Applied Science (all OCR for anyone who cares) on top of a full teaching timetable. I was told there would be something in it for me 2 years ago i.e. a TLR when I started this but no, not even some protected time and I feel like I've been duped by my HoD and Deputy Head. At a recent National Strategy meeting for Secondary ITT providers we were told it was about to be launched that week - some two weeks ago - but I have spotted nothing since. You can also find a mysterious powder and do flame testing, and you can find a note and do some chromatography. You need to do something to make sure they all have motives. E.g. two of them are having an affair and the lab tech is blackmailing them, (so there are notes about that) another one has been cheating on the coursework and the lab tech has found out. Another could be secretly ...

The new BTEC spec is now better than the last one. It allows you to complete differerent amounts of work for differing abilities/ attitudes of students. There are BTEC firsts equivalent to 1 GCSE, 2 GCSEs or 4 GCSEs. If like us you start the BTEC in Yr 9 that gives you 3 years to get all of your students at least one GCSE in science. It also depend upon how low ability your students ...

In reality few PGCE students will get much A-level teaching and it's rare for NQTs to get any either so it probably doesn't really matter. If you're going down the chemistry route then make sure you're confident in your pure chemistry. Biochemistry is on the biology A-level not chemistry and to teach A-level chemistry you need to be confident in a lot of physical chemistry. As a Head...

Recognise 1 and 5 but don't really use the others. Chemsheets is a good website for practicals. Uploading your practicals would be very welcome! Regarding the extraction of benzoic acid, could you not start with Methyl Benzoate and carry out a hydrolysis and then produce the benzoic acid? Might be fun to add a couple of steps. Also I oddly love the smell of the practical! :)

APP's not compulsory yet. In my school we are taking specific tasks and using them for only one or two of the AFs each (rather than marking every piece of work). I think we'll be looking into marking them as a department. I've told the pupils that in this piece of work I'm looking for you to show scientific understanding so they know what to concentrate on.

I was in exactly your position five years ago so I know exactly how you feel! Don't worry, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The first thing I did was contact my county science advisor. She was brilliant! She came into school to work with me and helped me to prioritise and get started. She was also invaluable for resources as she had been to lots of schools and knew what worked. ...
