Accredited alternatives to Short...

fpno@another.com: Most colleges/sixth forms in Enfield do not recognise short courses. They work on number of GCSEs not number of points. However I think the original query was about the benefit of the short course to the school rather than to the student going onwards? In this case, it is irrelevant if it is then RE or not for a Headteacher. As only full course GCSEs count then the sensible thing would be to make all do...

want2teach40: I'm thinking about meditation this can be a bit of grey area, as meditation is seem by some groups/people as being a religious practise and will complain. for example some evangelical groups believe meditation allowed the devil and evil into a persons life. whats the video? and why does it have to link into PSHE? you could try something like philosophy for children, let the kids try to come...

Responding to difficult questions

All sounds preferable to the answer I got to that same question in my RE lessons (20 years ago) The dear Nun asked if I was prepared to die on the cross for Jesus Christ. Funnily enough the teenage me was horrified by the idea! Leading to the answer that yes, I would then burn in hell.

Subscribe to RE Today and if you are doing GCSE get some text books and get your ssubject knowledge up to speed. In fact get the SOW for whatever year group you are teaching - buy some books - even pupil ones as they will be straightforward to follow and make sure you can feel confident about what you have to teach. Also talk to HOD about personal and child protection issues that are frequently raised through good RE and...

Confused about Eid

flame108: I am so glad you said that, Miss Pious. In all the years I've taught Muslim children, I've never heard them call Eid-ul-Adha 'greater Eid' usually Big Eid, or as you have said, just Eid. Yes this is more common place.... but tbh my concern is when inividuals attempt to make "religious matters/teaching" more "correct" not taking into the actual followers of the faith...

Responding to difficult questions

kathlta: With regards to Christianity, I think it's really important to share that Christians believe whilst man looks at the outward, God sees the heart and if that person accepts Jesus even in their very last moment, they will go to Heaven. I had some students ask about heaven and hell who had been 'accosted' by an evangelist in the shopping centre who had really frightened them regarding hell and damnation - the whole...

Want to teach RE but...
Published (2009-11-25 10:20:00)
As another person has said I'd always tend to go for a specialist than a non-specialist when appointing as the subject knowledge is so dense for RE. Even now, after 5 years of teaching and RS A-Level and degree, I'm still coming up with new things. Again as mentioned before I'd speak to the HOD of RE and see about observing some lessons. Depending on the school situation see if you could take a KS3 class,...

want2teach40: the focus is Buddhist response to asking questions about the origin of the universe. Buddhism gives no suggestion about the origins of the universe, possibly because there is no belief in God.They seem to think that we should concentrate on things we can do something about rather than spending time thinking about what we cannot answer nor influence. There are two Eids http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/islam/holy days/eiduladha.shtml Eid means festivity. Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan (with an n at the end). Eid-ul-Adha - which we will be celebrating in school this coming Friday - marks the time when Ibrahim was prepared to submit to sacrifice his son Ismail to follow Allah's will. OCR are putting on introductory courses, which are free until the end of 2009. Worth going to! There are plenty of resources on the OCR website, including model answers which might help. Remember that the marking is done by levels, and not by points, so you can't really award a certain number of points for religion, opinion, and so on.

Hi Gemzied, I don't know if anyone has emailed you, but from what I can work out the Mark Schemes are at the bottom of the Specimin papers - just keep scrolling down! Have to say I don't like the new OCR Spec very much - what happened to the writing essay answers for all of it?! Still, I have another year of the old spec as our students do GCSE in a year. Phew. Anyway - hope...

I don't think it is a perfect answer. You need to give an answer for and against in order to get more than 3 marks.

hey the first step i did was to transfer the existing At1&2 levels into an APP grid as thats how our school wants them presenting. From there i divided into into 5 AF (assessment focus) strands - 3 under At1 & 2 under At2. I did that be looking at the current level decriptions and seperate similar items into different strands e.g. religious vocab, religion & life, beliefs & teachings ...

I think there is a work sheet to go along with this on Restuff.org I have also just given them a list of key quotes that link to the soul 'breath of life' 'physical body and spiritual body' I know you wanna teach it well but I am yet to see an OCR exam question that is...

go with your instincts if the kids are interested and you feel they will get more out of it than the original LP. if you feel the kids are just taking the Micky and lesson diverting, don't.

Do you teach at the moment? If you do I would speak to the Head of RE about observing some lessons in your free periods to see if it is what you expect and to get some experience. Then you could offer to teach a calss or two at KS3 next year to gain some experience. If you don't already teach it would be a harder route - RE has been a shortage subject for many years but the offering...
