Christmas presents

Keep Smiling!: Hiya, I was just wondering if anyone buys their class presents for Christmas? If so, what sort of things do you buy? Obviously I haven't got lots of money so if anyone has got any ideas I'd love to hear any suggestions!   I used to buy a few little gifts per child from this website: http://www.hawkin.com/

I see their writing in isolation and have very little clout when it comes to improving the writing.

Hello, we do about 1hour 45 mins a week. If u where being picked for Science SATs you would have been notified by now, our partner school has and I know of 4 others who have too so dont worry. Its a shame that Science is being touted as "not a core subject" anymore

short vowel sounds - help needed
Published (2009-11-25 06:14:00)
tinyears: a child (from Ukraine) in my class who really finds distinguising the short vowel sounds 'e', 'i' and 'a'.   On the Learning to Read page of my website www.englishspellingproblems.co.uk  common English words are grouped by their vowel sounds. He could try practising reading those and perhaps learn around 10 new ones each day. The fastest way to learn any new language is simply...

Helping a child to read.
Published (2009-11-25 13:23:00)
It sounds like he needs lots of practice of sounding out and blending all-through-the-printed-word for reading and also plenty of practice of orally segmenting all-through-the-spoken-word for spelling and then writing sound dashes for that many sounds followed by writing the graphemes for each sound identified, followed by sounding out and blending again to check the spelling. If he is not yet able to 'hear' or 'discern'...

could they get the children to direct each other to do something with the phone- e.g. open a contact or message, perhaps with their backs to each other or while the one using the phone has his eyes closed, then get them to evaluate the use of verbal instructions given to each other? perhaps they could have time to explore the phone at the start of the activity and then give each other ...

I'm a year 5 teacher, your lesson sounds good and fairly challenging particularly the extension. The only thing I would say is your lo is slightly complicated and needs to be more child friendly, include in your intro an explanation to the chn on how they'll meet it and in the plenary refer back to whether it has been met using children to give examples.

Just have to respond to post 5 - very unnecessary in tone... I'm a Christian - yet I don't go to church every week - yet I am true to my faith and wouldn't judge anyone by being able to attend a church... Also as a Christian I would be upset not to be able to decorate my classroom - my decoration are owned by myself and my teaching partner (not paid for by taxpayers I can assure...

Hi Lauren, I'm not sure how helpful this will be but I;ll give it a go. Investigation is what maths is all about. Investigating the patterns of mathematics,be they shape, number colour or letter, and making predictions based on what we spot from doing the investigating. Therefore it may be more helpful and reliee pressure on you a bit to think of investigations as one of the core ...

How awful, I'm glad I don't work in your school. What a horrible way to treat people. Technically by law, your ass. head is right. According the law you are entitled to a 20 min break if you are expected to work for six continuous hours, so this would be your lunch break. Check whether anything is stated in your contract about breaks.

Hi! I've been teaching in various form for about 17 years now and have 3 children. I would say that full time teaching is extremely time consuming and esp. when you first start out. After doing part time and supply I decided I missed having my own class - I was teaching virtually full time and spent most of the time at home snapping, crying or working.. I now work part time and look -...

My daughter's in year 1 and my mummy friends always want to know how kids get chosen. I am generally truthful and tell them kids with good memories and loud voices get speaking parts (or at least that's how my school does it!) Everything else is names from a hat. I also emphasise that it's hard to accommodate everyone when we have so many kids to find roles for. It's OK for me this ...

It is NOT statutory - lots of schools, but not all are using it; National Curriculum is the only statutory document. APP should not be arduous, it should alos only be for a few, representative, children in your class not everyone.

Fractions of packets of sweets for fractions of numbers? That might make the topic seem a bit more appealing? Fractions of anything foody (cake, pizza...) for fractions of a whole. I'm just starting this with mixed 3/4 too (with a strong top group - though they're not as strong on fractions as they are on place value). Understanding that fractions 'work' with parts of a whole and ...

I have a child in a similar situation and I took pictures of him all day and then wrote a small book about what he did that day..he enjoys reading it as it is about him and I have been able to ensure the lettering is large and has a clear font. I deliberately introduced some words that he would find challenging and underneath in the book put how to sound it out so that he doesn't look ...

Hi there, I completely empathise with you - all I would suggest is that the schools that you visit apply for one if you are visiting them on a semi regular basis. Or you could get one via each individual LA to cover you for that area? Hope that you get it sorted
