FolkFan: What evidence do you have that there are problems in the schools of those posters you criticise then? Or is that just your prejudice? I don't believe my rant post was directed at anyone on here, if people feel the need to take it personally or find the content rings an internal bell, that's up to them. My comment is based upon facts that are uncovered regularly as part of my job, and therefore, an...

I think that you probably had grounds for appealing last year as well.  For P8, you are not required to ensure that ALL the pupils you teach  achieve well 'relative to their prior attainment, making progress as good as, or better than, similar learners nationally'. You simply have to demonstrate thta you had the teaching skills to ensure that average or better progress was made by some pupils you taught. ...

TLR progression enquiry....
Published (2009-11-26 10:27:00)
I know exactly what you're saying, tafkam - andas I've pointed out, the TLR offered is higher than the postholder's previous one.  That the postholder thinks s/he should get more is neither here noe there, of course - s/he can either accpet the new post with the increased salary or reject it. What seems to be confusing the issue for the poster and the postholder is the notion that if someone were appointed...

Please be assured, I'm not saying that the new post must have a higher TLR, only that if the new postholder is going to be taking on a new role in addition to their existing TLR role, then a new job is being created. For example, imagine the RE Subject Leader is on the lowest TLR2a. The Assessment Co-ordinator, on TLR2b, leaves. RE Subject Leader is appointed to the post. The school has the option of  (a) trying to recruit a...

Published (2009-11-26 22:07:00)
Right, Vicki, I just went to dig out my traditional letter on this.  Here it is, with my introduction. There is a formal procedure involved in asking to change your part-time hours, and I suggest that you do it, very formally. Here is my standard-answer-that-I-prepared-earlier on requesting p-t as a parent: You have a legal right to make an application (but only once per year), and have it seriously considered, but not a right to...

Whether or not it is too cheeky, i'll leave for others to comment on. I intend to try and reduce my hours starting in Sept. I went on mat leave on 2nd Sept this year and will return in July on my current hours. Any letter I write regarding a reduction in hours will state clearly' 'with effect from 1st Sept'.

Really Tafkam? I am stuck on this one to be honest. I want to support this staff member as I can see what their point is - but I don't know and have no presidents to follow on it. OK - So if I am to represent them and pose this, what can I present? They are remaining as a HoD, and taking on a role in middle management.

Maternity leave confusion
Published (2009-11-19 10:56:00)
My wife is on maternity leave now, having had our baby in August (in the summer holidays) - we're both teachers so hopefully I can help a little with this one. It's up to you when maternity leave starts - the only rule is that it has to start as soon as the baby is born or before; if it's due in the summer holidays then unfortunately that means you're using up holiday time as maternity leave, but that's how...

The regulations regarding TLRs are pretty clear in the STPCD. Having said that many (especially smaller) primaries 'expect' teachers to lead/coordinate subject areas without one and if there isn't one in your school's staffing strcture you are unlikely to get one, regardless of the workload. You could however negotiate leadership time in which to carry out any extra work not expected of...

why is it the last day? my understanding is that you have until aug 31st for this round. and also you don't need copies of your pm reviews as these will be on file - you just need to submit a letter saying you wish to apply. admittedly i am on mat leave and things may have changed in the last month or 2. enjoy the wine, and i believe all in not lost. i'm sure someone more in the ...

HeadTeachersPube: It is a case that is someone like this takes on a role, they can only expect the gap between their present TLR and the additional role TLR in renumeration? Of course. You get paid what the new TLR pays you, not an additional chunk on top of your existing TLR. The new TLR replaces the old one.

You are employed as a Teacher, therefore the Head can tell you to teach any subject they want you to. If you've made it clear that you don't want to teach that subject then the Head may well try to find a suitably qualified teacher, and certainly if it's a shortage subject, they may well feel it necessary to advertise with R&R points. If you've asked and the Head has said "no" to ...

As I understand it, so long as you rejoin the TPS within 5 years you retain your current terms (ie being able to retire at age 60). If you are getting Child Benefit paid in your name you will be accruing NI contributions that will go towards a state pension. We have 3 children under the age of 5 and my husband has given up work, with a view to returning when our youngest starts school...

I think she'll have difficulty turning down your request to drop the three cover afternoons. The only legal grounds I can see is if it were to prove impossible to recruit someone for the three afternoons, which seems unlikely with the current supply/demand situation. If you make the request sooner rather than later, there wil be plenty of time to attempt to recruit someone. Even if it's...
