Oh, and Eruditis, thank you for contributing!  I also lean towards the "best done by someone from outside" point of view when it gets to certain gory details, but now this is going to be part of a compulsory curriculum, which with any luck is going to be comprehensive social relationship education too.

I am also PSHE and Citizenship coordinator and things have been left to stagnate where management didnt consider it important neither did the students. We want to relaunch with the new national curriculum and I could really do with some good sow especially for KS3. I agree that at KS4 a accredited programme is the way forward. Let me know if someone can help me out.  Thanks

Teachers TV has some useful films. Try "Drugs Emergency Action" which is set in a hospital's A & E department and shows the effects and consequences of drug taking. The film highlights alcohol, heroin, cannabis amongst others.

you're right to make it as practical as possible- i would use lots of props and get the students to say which hobbies they could partipate in with which piece of equipment e.g. small spade for gardening, tennis raquet,  etc... you could also try grouping these "props" e.g. cricket bat and ball, football and goalie's gloves, plant pot and spade etc. It might seem like a lot of stuff to collect but...

Domestic violence
Published (2009-11-27 11:02:00)
Hi, I'm writing a piece for a national paper on why it's a good idea to teach children a s young  as five about domestic violence and why it's never acceptable. Do any of you have any opinions on this? I'd be especially interested in hearing any anecdotes about young children exhibiting violent tendencies in class or talking about violence in the home and how this is tackled. I'd of course change all...

Type any unit title e.g. alcohol or sex education or SEAL into the search and you'll find that plenty of ideas and links have already been posted up. Check through backdated posts and you will find plenty to get going.

I think in today's society children need to be taught SRE earlier than I was taught it! So many children are now starting puberty in middle primary and teachers and children need to be aware of this and know how to 'deal' with it when it happens. By informing the children about what will happen to them we are preparing them better. I know there will be lots of people out there screaming...

Rotherham have already produced one - is very good. only suggestions to improve are to include scenario work and role play with hot seating and make sure the scenarios are teenager friendly ie their age and realistic scenariosn. i ahve taught this for a number of years and teachers require training. the rotherham pack is called safety in relationships.
