The Pobble: S'OK, Po! I'm still eeking out the sleepers myself. Horrible isn't it? I'm hoping that this current bout of insomnia is temporary - else I'm going to look like I've spent all Christmas under the influence! The Pobble: We've just been asked to add a short course - to A Level PE!!!!! In a specialist sports college!!!!!! Something called 'Working with Others" has...

There is alot of talk going on about what/whether the 1st dip students will have to take on additional short courses. I COULD get through the material alot quicker, but we do alot of additional work/practicals/motivational activities with our 1st dip students to prepare them for being successful on a level 3 course. The skeptic in me says these changes are to support/encourage more schools to offer the 4GCSE equivalent course and...

The Pobble: dianeak: In summary what are the changes to the btecs? Crikey - in summary isn't going to be easy! Not going into the whole 14 - 19 thing, some of the content to existing courses has been changed in the new syllabus 2008/10 rejig. This means all units have had to be re-worked to match. With this some GLH/costings have changed, and new courses have been added, that's all really! ...

Why did you choose to teach in FE?
Published (2009-12-24 08:53:00)
I disagree with the comment about the WEA (but I would, wouldn't I?), it has a great tradition, an extraordinary legacy and is doing its very best to remain true to the ethos of its founder Albert Mansbridge during challenging times. Like many of those I worked with, I came to teach in FE through no great career plan - I was offered the chance to do some part-time teaching at a time (late 80s) when colleges were seeing a significant...

LSC Pays £5m in bonuses
Published (2009-12-19 10:31:00)
The LSC paid its staff £5m in bonuses. The reason given was; "The Learning and Skills Council achieved strong delivery against government priorities. For example, it met the 2010 target of 2.25m Skills for Life achievements two years early; learner success rates have risen from 59% in 2000/01 to 78% in 2006/07. "These bonuses reflect this performance." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8420556.stm I...

I started in FE as a classroom support worker and giving 1:1 support. After 3 years of sitting in classes thinking "I wonder if I could do that" a job came up that gave me the chance to try. I've done my PGCE and I love the challenge of trying to persuade students that functional skills are worthwhile and when they come back to tell me that they have got "that" job or are enjoying ...

Hi, I would say the passing of the average term I acted as serrogate dad, mentor, sage, social worker, refree, independant adjudicator, investigator, and general feilder of c**p. Oh and occassionally I get to deliver the subject that I love.

Hi, I'm the reporter who responsible for that story. Glad you picked it up. Any thoughts or experiences concerning just how common this kind of sharp practice is? Lots of organisations in FE are keen to downplay it - but then it's not in anyone's interest to discover that it's "endemic", as the whistleblower suggests.

I have little that will help you, but in my honest opinion most problems that young people face can be well explained by Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Get people to the top of the pyramid and they will acquire emotional intelligence to a greater degree, in my opinion. Unfortunately, society does not want people toreach such heights, because it is not conducive to corporate profits.

In what ways are the qualifications not appropriate for your learners? It's difficult to comment, otherwise?

Nobody here has been sampled yet. It is probably too early in the year? People around me are saying that there will not be any sampling this year because it is a "practice run", whatever that means. I don't know if this is accurate or not though. As my CPD record is on paper - perfectly acceptable, and given the limits of Reflect, quite sensible to do - so it will have to be posted, I...

Are your groups small? That's the only time that I've encountered courses having a lower allocation in time. Our college uses a student to staff ratio in order to work out how many hours per academic year the course will have. We don't get around it as such. Obviously, if there is a course that's over subscribed then it will be bringing in more money and that could subsidise the ...
