Fortunately, the OP doesn't seem to be one of those pushy parents. Why did you use the word 'stimulated' when 'played with' might have sounded less pushy?

Below is a link to an online petition regarding the government's proposal for five-year teacher licencing. You can read my thoughts on this thread but I urge people to consider signing the petition if you feel that there are already plenty of measures in place for addressing teaching quality: http://community.tes.co.uk/forums/p/366152/5114578.aspx#5114578 It takes seconds to sign these online petitions - and if you...

Indoor gross motor activities

At our nursery, there is a climbing frame, slide, balancing beam and ladders that can attach to the climbing frame, which we get out in bad weather and to observe p.d. Large wooden blocks are very good construction toys.

I think after the outbursts of ecolie (mis-spelt) then farms are out of the question now for visits. Maybe a parent has a tortoise or something.

observation-winter lesson-advice?
Published (2009-11-26 19:56:00)
We asked children to tell us before we started our winter topic what they would like to find out-these were the responses. The children have said they would like to find out more about robins-did think about making bird feeders? Or with Jackfrost/ice-did think a nice activity would be to freeze a disposable glove with water and talk about how Jack Frost has left hand behind-how can we keep from melting etc- and explore materials etc? (saw...

Indoor gross motor activities
Published (2009-11-27 22:28:00)
In the perfect EYFS situation you would have constant free-flow indoor/outdoor play so you could get all your gross motor skills areas outside. As you seem to have a lot of space you could do lots inside. Another idea which is v. cheap and which Msz/s post made me remember is to get carpet squares (free from local carpet shop) and put numbers or shapes on to them. You can develop all sorts of balancing, hopping,...

Advice for NQT - Down in the dumps.

I am sorry you feel this way - but you sre still learning! AND Recepetion is one of the hardest stages to teach because it is so unlike anything else. Look at a book called - Open questions, I think it is called ( I will try and find it and let you know)- these are the types of questions you ask that should challenge and extend the children's thinking. In other words not necessarily questions that the children get either right or wrong -...

parent helpers on outings

Our school also uses parent helpers for trips without CRB checks. They aren't left alone with the children.

My class do little activities with parents in the mornings as they are coming into school, they trace over letters and numbers with green start and red stop dots. They also have their name to practise in a similar format. I don't know if it is frowned upon but it works well for our children, they are used to the format.

What about using those cloves that you add to wine to make mulled wine.

Some children learn how to write in upper case letters at home and never quite get over it. Some have parents who spend their time on mobile phones or wired up to ipods or who give them no boundaries conversation, stories, books, songs, rhymes, manners, simple turn-taking games....

I think you are absolutely right. Your ORT books do not suit early readers. You have told parents about how children are learning to read by bleinding sounds, so you need to follow through on this. Would recommend Jelly and Bean, Songbirds, moving on to Read Write Inc when enough sounds known. All these gradually build up a bank of high frequency words. A shared story book is what we...

Gosh, that is a tough interview...a plan for each year group from YrR-Yr6?! From a Yr 1 teacher's perspective... The Rainbow Fish works well in PSHE with Yr R and Yr 1 and promotes discussion on sharing, being kind and being friendly. You could make puppets and use them to role play what The Rainbow Fish should have said to be kind. I guess the risk with this one is that they might ...

Saw a nice xmas activity last year Children had decorated lots of different style stars made from card and more or less covered in glitter. They were hung from the ceiling and when it came dark (or you could draw the curtains) children used torches to shine on the stars and sang twinkle twinkle little star - loved it!

Hear, hear! Kids only spend 15% of their time with us. Parents should be teaching these basic life skills. Sadly each year I feel I have to train the parents aswell as their children.

How many words have you been using? I wouldn't worry about the parrallel class too much, each class is different. Perhaps you could ask her what she is doing to see if she is using any different strategiesto you? If not then I would accept that they are just diffferent classes.

Hi, well done for persevering with this - playdough making is a great experience for children. A lot depends on your group size - the fewer children the more complicated you can get. My favourite it the basic uncooked recipe which only lasts a few days but is easy to make and has never gone wrong (although I make no guarantees). Just mix the ingredients together, putting the water in ...

Send them home again if you don't think they can cope with school! More inconvenient for parents having to come back and collect them. Our parents either can't wait to dump their kids on us ill or not OR they keep them off every time they sneeze once or as 1 Mum told me **** couldn't come to school cos she (Mum) had appointments. As they aren't statutary age nothing we can do about ...

I was like the girl who did'nt talk in nursery would whisper everything to my cousin. I have to say only by the reception teacher working with me a lot of 1 to 1 that it started me talking, i was happy to talk at home but school was different (my mum says) Sometimes it is hard to know whether 1 to 1 will work of if the child will eventually speak on her own as she is capable. Does ...

Remember an autistic child many
think visually. This means they are more likely to learn about words
and letters through visual stimulation. Almost every child has a
special interest, and autistic children are no exception. If they like
trains, you may want to use them as a visual guide to learning how to
read. If they are interested in the subject matter they are more likely
to...
