When is D&T week next year?
Published (2009-11-24 05:06:00)
I run a Primary Technology Challenge, local primaries are sent a pack, that they can work on in class/after school and then send teams in to the Challenge taking place on the Friday of the week. So far the challenge has involved trebuchets, automata and rockets.

food practical lessons

We get 4x60 minute lessons a fortnight (with the exception of Year 7 who get 3x60 minute lessons a fortnight.) There is always a double lesson in each fortnight, the other lessons are singles.

I don't really have strong feelings either way on this BUT one thought crossed my mine. Class sizes - I currently have max 20 students in a group (odd, very rare 21). 2 food rooms & usually 2 food teachers on at any one time, teaching to capacity. From a timetabling point of view what would we be matched against to ensure we keep the smaller class sizes? I also like the support of other practical teachers. Those who...

brilliant. Thanks. I have been working on some ideas to do with food servers, perhaps making the sort of burger lifters like I saw in springy bamboo as well as the trad salad servers - do kids really know what to do with these? Also making small one piece clocks, akin to the ones using line benders with acrylic but in laminate. But would love some other ideas. The year BTEC project is not such a problem as I have a clear brief for that but...

Could you embed them within marking criteria?  I've made a kind of merged version of the NC with the other aspects pulled in, to hopefully tick all the boxes in one neat package.

I have an overall risk assessment form that I use and I put specific items into individual lesson plans. Also have a microwave assessment form - if you are interested could try to send them to you. (Not very computer savvy).

Our students get 3 periods (hours) a fortnight at KS3, although we have requested an extra hour when they next review the curriculum. We have a 7 form entry and these are split into three groups for technology (2 forms split into 3 groups, 2 forms split into 3 groups, and 3 forms split into 5 groups). We never have more than 20 students in a class. We work on a carousel system with ...

You could have a look at middlex university on line - http://www.mutr.co.uk/ , they do sample packs of some of the smart materials like the electro fabrics cheep, not enough for whole project but might spark a few ideas. They also do a thermo dyes which you can use with fabric paints a bit like those sweaty tshirts we all had in the 80s they change colour with temp changes.

You have to remeber that a single micro like a PICAXE connot do more than one thing at a time. You will have to turn On or Off the lights before and after the sound commands. If you use a tune command with a whole string of notes you will not be able to,easily 'interrupt' the tune to flash the lights. Light On Note Command Light Off Next note Light On Next note etc etc If you ...
