It'd be hard to say how this will work until it has been in place for a bit, but I think it is noble to try something like this. Speaking for myself, I think I would have been more motivated to learn if I was working toward the next level and could achieve it at any time, instead of just treading water in a grade (for someone who tested three grades above grade level, that could get burdensome.) Look to our fearless President-elect for the same sort of hypocrisy. Are the outraged parents going to file a lawsuit?I'd be interested in following it, but I believe these parents are just plain out of luck.

I guess I'd be opposed to swiping my license to go in any old place - the grocery store, the movie theater - but this sounds like a good idea to me. And it goes far beyond sex offenders. It seems like a lot of other people could be identified - people with outstanding warrants, drug dealers trying to enter a school, etc. And what if there was something horrible like a shooting? The school could go back and have an accurate picture of who...

fuzzy math

Hi there, I realize this thread is quite dated, but it is of interest to me. I am a teacher of second grade and teach math using the TERC Investigations (which many would refer to as "fuzzy math"). And believe it or not - I LOVE it!! I would love to discuss this topic further, and would gladly help parents of K-2 elementary aged kids make sense of the math their children are doing, but I suppose I should first find out if...

What's so bad about that? I wouldn't want my kids around 'hood children or trailer park kids. It isn't necessary for their academic development, and may be counter to what the parents wish to have their kids exposed to in terms of their social development. Last time I checked, income is not a protected class under existing precedent from SCOTUS, so until it is...deal with it.

The grading would ONLY be strict if the same number of students earned 94 as in the system with 10 point system. Saying that a 94 is an A does not automatically mean that the marking system is harder. You can be comparing apples and oranges! That is why the US have the SAT requirement for university-college admission.

These parents' fears aremisplaced. Dh is on a college scholarship committee and they rarely even look at GPAs, except to confirm that the individual in question meets the minimum standards. High school grading systems are all over the place, and nobody in their right mind uses them as a basis for comparison. Besides, every college admissions person in the country is familiar with Fairfax County schools. They all know the Fairfax County...

I'll bite. :-) What do you see as the main benefit for using Investigations math compared to other math programs? Why? How do you assuage parental fears that the children are learning "fuzzy math"? TIA, Mizzou

I agree with everyone that has stated or implied that "readiness is unique to each child". It always boggles me when people ( by way of studies or whathaveyou) try to claim absolutes re: child development (or most anything for that matter). Even identical twins may perceive things differently and therefore learn things at a different rate and/or in a different manner. I most definitely ...

I think it's a wonderful idea! I agree that I wouldn't want to swipe my ID every where, either. At a school, however, it seems a reasonable thing to do.

Folks, I recently did a paper on Alfie Kohn for an education class. I'm not sure what the education community thinks of this guy- I wonder if he is taken seriously by the establishment, as his ideas are not evident in most classrooms. Whether or not he is taken seriously, I like a lot of the things he says. I am interested what you all think. First off, he'd like to do away with grades. ...

What is the grading scale at your child's school? Is it the same in all of the schools in the district? Do you think we should cut out letter grades and just us percentages? If using letter grades should all of the schools in the district use the same scale or only schools on the same level (all elementaries use one, all middle and so on...) My son in is elementary school and their grading ...
