..."Last I heard we are getting gasoline from the UK as it is surplus. "...   It is hard to be less dependent on "foreign" oil, when we knowingly and willingly continue to ....and, and, and.... IMPORT MORE FOREIGN oil   I just got off a second test drive of the new 2009 BMW 335 D TWIN turbo diesel with 425 # ft of (monster) torque . While it DOES get 36 mpg, which is more than most folks get with the...

You shouldn't take our discussions personally. We are batting around ideas, not people. Gee, I thought it was quite productive, and brought us around to some consensus and clarity. Everyone can contribute to everyone else. That's what great about forums. That's why I started this topic, to learn what was on everyone's mind.   Anyway--- Thanks larsb! I'm going to run off and check out the diesel scene for...

No whining, no down shifting like crazy. It just happens. Like a big V8 in the 70s   That is what I am talking about. I love driving the back highways in San Diego and Southern CA. Up and down and with hairpins and lots of turns. Aside from an old 1978 Porsche 911 my Passat TDI was the most fun to drive those roads. Problem is when I get to the desert and want to go down a sandy wash, it is too low to the ground. In search of the...

There is not enough refining capacity now to increase diesel fuel output, so the market demands a higher price for a scarcer product. Refineries cannot turn on a dime. They are refining what they are set up to do, and so it doesn't matter if refining diesel is actually a less complex process.   And even though diesel cars have not taken off here, we still have plenty of pickups, trucks and buses using it. Not only that, but...

The f-150 is suppose to get a diesel engine in the 09 half year module some time in april. The only thing I am concerned is that some dumm $$ is going to use a 5th wheel camper behind it when they should have been using a f-350 see to many trucks that way. They are over there weight limit and DOT cops only pulls over company trucks not the mom and pop who should not be pulling the item behind them. Get this!! seen a guy pulling a pontuine...

Everything I see in all the reviews says that 6 and 7 speed transmissions are a feature, not a bug.

You know I seem to remember back in 63 or so Chrysler had a turbine car that would run on just about anything that would burn.

Yay. Another true believer...   No, seriously. Turbo diesels are great for daily driving. Honestly 95% of the time, other than a freeway on ramp for a few seconds before the light at the end or the slow guy in the lane you have to merge into ruins your fun, people are doing 10-40mph quick speed changes. You don't have the room to wind the car up, nor do you have the speed limits that allow it. Torque is a huge thing in such a...

I'm thinking that one main reason people in the USA do not buy Diesels is because we keep getting told we dont buy diesels in the USA !   I'm thinking the reason the oil companies sell diesel at a higher cost is that they can, we dont have a system of checks to make a private company charge what they should so they charge all they can with no worries !   I'm thinking that car makers will fight making longer...

70 MPG car in the Insight with bells and wistles but it didn't sell. I regret not getting one and have made an offer on one from a man I know in Colorado. Getting a used Honda is still a better deal than a new VW. IMHO VW has been on the bottom half of the dependability list in JD powers so long they may get a award. I am just gun shy after having had three VWs.

I have about 2200 miles on my new 07 2500HD 4x4, and only averaging around 13 MPG so far. Those are combined in town and highway miles driven at 65 to 75 MPH, and some small trailer towing. It's still increasing at each fuel-up, so I'm hoping it will reach a 17-20 MPG range when it's fully broken in.

You are exactly right. The components that make up the bulk of the cost per mile driven are depreciation, taxes, finance costs etc. On an older car most of these expenses are avoided or at least already paid for.

Hi, I'm new to diesels and am trying to determine what to replace my Chev 3/4 ton HD gas with. Would love to have car and truck but cannot afford it so this needs to be versatile. I drive to/from work ~40mi roundtrip plus haul a 8 - 11 thousand lb horsetrailer on weekends & vacations. I am wondering what the difference in mileage would be in mixed city/highway driving unloaded would be ...

Has anyone found a minimum 45 cetane fuel that is required by Ford? The only fuel I can find (in Virginia) is 40 cetane, and add a cetane booster when filling up. Any suggestions?
