While it's true that increased inflation expectations can drive a steepening yield curve, we're also seeing a steepening of the TIPS curve. As you point out, it's not enough to say that the nominal yield curve is steepening, it is a rise in real yields that suggest an improving economic outlook. The CNN article looks at yields from Jan '09 to today. Over the same time frame the 5-10 TIPS curve went from a negative...

I wound up picking up this one - Honeywell TH6220D1002 - Honeywell - FocusPRO Programmable Thermostat (2H/2C) The setback doesn't use as much energy as I thought so I think it will pay for itself after a couple of months.

Thanks kaneohe. The 2% AGI limit is too bad... If non-deducatable TIRA had gains, they would be taxed, but in case of loss, you don't get any credit for them due to the 2% of the AGI floor.

I had planned to top off my tax bracket with Roth conversions during my early retirement years, buttttt after 7 years I'm still in the planning stage for that strategy. I'm really leaning strongly toward converting one IRA s&p fund this year and a brokerage fund + TSP next year. The delayed taxes look like a good deal ...

Is there a way to figure out how much you'd need to "set aside" each year to offset inflation in future years ? The goal is to "mimic" a COLA pension.
Example: Given a $10,000 /year DB pension. 3% inflation. 5% investment return. 30 year life expectancy.
I'm trying to ...

I would have thought "tipping" them with your rent every month and being a model tenant is more than enough... (plus, you can always express your gratitude in words - I think that would be quite appreciated)

Nat gas is cheaper than electricity to produce heat. We spend roughly $300 a year on natural gas for heat (may be closer to $200 with the reduced nat gas rates). At 8.5 cents a kWh for electricity, that would allow us to run our small portable 1500 watt electric heater for 40 minutes every hour during a 150 day heating season from ~Oct 15-Mar 15. That would keep one room very very toasty but ...

First general comment is that buying bonds direct you'd better be prepared to hold to maturity otherwise the transaction costs will eat you alive. Second general comment is that I would not go very far out on the yield curve now (at most three years... at most) given the liklihood of increasing interest rates.
Yes you can buy through Vanguard. That is who I use, but I wonder whether a bond ...

Your question depends to a very large extent on which country.
If the country is one that has a tax treaty with the US (as many do), then the treaty will set forth the rules.
In the case of the US and Canada, the country where the funds originate typically can tax the first 15%. The country of non-origination will then proceed to tax you, but will give you a credit for taxes already paid...

When my Mom passed, it worked really well to have me on her checking account as a joint owner. There were absolutely no issues with accessing her funds. She had a nasty habit of forgetting to balance her checking account so I had some money in a linked saving account that was also accessible.

Gunni, welcome to the forum.
I see information about assets, income and health care, but nothing about expenses. I don't think anyone can provide a decent response unless we know that side of the equation. Once you have an idea of your annual expense needs, run your numbers through FIRECalc (link below) to get an idea of what you can safely spend each year. If projected expenses don't ...

Good article. Thanks for posting. One good thing for us that has come out of the dismal stock performance these past years is that it has motivated me to work much harder at my business because that is more of a predictable income source.
For most of our lives we were very aggressive investors in stocks but losses in the past the past year or so and approaching retirement have had us ...

heh heh heh - we have an IRS manned by a couple of little ladies down the street. At age 66 they all look young to me.
