Power for Quad-SLI
Published (2009-12-22 16:05:00)
Since that Legitreview is dated from 2007, I suspect what was once the 2000w model was scaled down and released as their 1600w model in reality. A single PSU solution would be nice, but I don't mind running two. What kind of rack would have the room for two PSUs and the required 10 PCIe slots? Hey WD, how's the X3TC fleet coming along?

9800 GX2, a worthy upgrade?
Published (2009-12-24 02:41:00)
I wouldn't say they perform on par with a 275 or 285... my stock 8800GT runs 5.3k PPD and my two factory overclocked ones do 5.7k PPD, whereas a 285 on the same unit (384 point) does 9.7k. When considering larger proteins such as the 511s, 8800GT drops to about 3.5k and the 285 will be 7.2k, so the more shaders really scale well with bigger units. I guess the OP just needs to consider what his/her priority is.

9800 GX2, a worthy upgrade?

Again your right, I have had those dips and highs. Yeah, it's up to the OP... If I had the finances, I would build a FASTRA II similar type rig and have a hell of a folding farm! Additional Comment: Oh, I meant two 8800's or one 9800x2 would be on par with the average PPD of an GTX285. Sorry...

Yea I use PCP&C 750 Quad/650TT Power Pack That ran 2x 295's but for some reason these Classy 285's have three 6 pins .. instead of an 8 and a 6...... so this solution would be short of the mark ..... Like I said though unless you are a bencher this is insanity to just run some games

Complete overkill, even for a bencher... Wait for the new cards to be released in like a month... Scaling is gonna terribly suck, and produce more heat than a heater.

asus mars vs 5970
Published (2009-12-22 01:02:00)
In most cases the 5970 will be more than 23% faster than an ordinary GTX295, so I doubt the Asus Mars will be serious competition for the 5970. Also 4GB or VRAM is totally overkill. But they will be close to each other, no doubt. That Asus Mars looks like a definate must for die-hard nvidia fans

Need Help Narrowing Down Choices!
Published (2009-12-20 16:11:00)
I know that the 5870 supports DX11, but say for example I don't intend on playing DX11 games and looking for performance between the cards. Would your choices still remain the same or change?

9800 GX2, a worthy upgrade?
Published (2009-12-24 07:23:00)
I am still on the fence lol. I see a 9800 GX2 being on par with the GTX 260 in many reviews and the gtx 280 pulling it together at higher res. The GTX 285 is supposed to perform 10 % better, I guess I will shop around and see if I can find one for less than 10 % more... The thing is, that 9800 GX2 effectively only costs 160 dollars... After I sell the PSU lol. I am in favor of the GTX 200 series, as buying old is probably not a good idea. I...

The 5770 handles high resolutions/anti- aliasing as well as the 4870 & 4890 do.
For his price range the 4890/GTX260 216 is the best card by about 10% over the 5770/4870/GTX260.

Use driver sweeper to remove leftover Nvidia files on your system, if not a complete reformat/install of your os. What does your psu output?

If the PC is shutting down completely that's almost always the PSU.
Usually if the GPU is going bad the computer will lock up but stay powered on, or you'll experience severe artifacting.
That Coolmax unit you have is DECENT but that's all you can say about it, I would replace it and see what happens, like you said, it's cheaper than a GPU.

For GTAIV, a faster quad would help more than even a 5970. 4ghz quad and a 5970 still gets me ~40fps max settings. You're better off finding the highest settings that still gets >40fps. You're better off waiting to see how Fermi runs it because the game definitely prefers nVidia.
