Rocco not a bucco
Published (2009-01-08 15:21:00)
If the BoSox DO sign Baldelli, that will be a disappointing development.  He is the kind of player who COULD help the team, probably at a reasonable price.  But, as others have pointed out, if Baldelli is any kind of healthy, we should expect other teams to outbid the Pirates. If the Pirates sign Gomes, that also will be a disappointing development.  In my view, Gomes is the kind of player who won't help the team, regardless of...

Just a hunch, but I have a feeling that Baldelli is going to put up solid numbers in 130 games next year. How can you blame the guy? He IS in the Rhode Island Italian American Hall of Fame. With that in mind who is the next RH guy with any power in the system after Steve "Pedro Cerrano" Pearce?    McCutchen will have decent Major League power, probably not this year, but in the future.  Neil Walker is a swith hitter with some...

Ha ha.  That's too bad.  We could have used some more BBs on our pitching staff.

Mags I called this one and I feel awful about it cause like you, I thought rocco would have been a good fit for us. I also agree that we should not sign gomes cause he is the second coming of paulino and that time would be much better suited to give pearce another shot in the outfield.Lets hope they do sign someone with power but I don't see them going beyond the organization for it but thats just my thought and hopefully I am wrong.

Things I would like to see happen
Published (2009-01-03 20:59:00)
The following are some things I would like to see happen before the start of traning camp/during the season: 1. DON'T sign a veteran starter. I see no real reason. We have Snell, Duke, and Maholm. All have some experience and if Dumatrait is in there, thats your veteran right there. 2. Let Pearce/Morgan battle for the last outfield spot. I still don't understand why everybody seems to have turned sour on Pearce. I think he and...

Pat the Bat goes to Tampa
Published (2009-01-07 02:14:00)
They got into the playoffs because of their key young players, a level the Pirates have yet to get to. They then and only then spent some money to break through the wall and try to win it - a tactic you don't recommend for a team just trying to win more than they lose. If the Pirates break through and then dont spend any money  to achieve the big goal, then we have an argument. Otherwise the move looks like all the past signings...

Possible RH power bat

Haha...I guess sarcasm can easily hide in message boards.  I was thinking of the complete opposite of a RH power bat, and Juan Pierre was the first to come to mind.  If Jason Kendall was lefty, he'd of course be #1.

Im biased because I want to see the players that I witnessed in Altoona play and make it at the big time level.Beyond that, I would rather see young players with a desire for the game than fading FAs at any level. The prospect of such is the only thing that maintains my interest in the Pirates.

Vazquez
Published (2009-01-04 22:36:00)
We should have taken the two million dollars we spent on Vazquez and invested it in a real ball player like Adam Dunn. Two million dollars for a reserve infielder?  Come on.       And what makes Adam Dunn a real ball player? the 190 strikeouts in a season or the .250 BA? Sure the money spent on Vazquez could have been better invested, but not on Adam Dunn.   Let's not forget Adam Dunn had impressive POWER numbers in one of the more...

The Pirates today agreed to terms with six players on minor league contracts and an invitation to spring training: relievers Chris Bootcheck , Denny Bautista and Juan Mateo ; infielders Garrett Jones and Andy Phillips ; and outfielder Jeff Salazar . Phillips has the most major league experience with the Reds, Mets and Yanks.  Jones has a little power, Mateo is kind of all over the place...

Ok well all I have been hearing from people is how they are waiting for the pirates to make another off season move and I say to that why.   Andruw Jones has reworked his deal with LA basically allowing them cut him. I realize he has done nothing in the last 2 years, but he could be an option for us short term. I would expect him to be looking to sign a 1 year deal to prove that he just had a bad couple of years. He is still only 31, so he should have some good baseball left in him. I am sure he is talented enough to make the move ...

So it looks like we will be signing Ramon Vazquez to a deal. Normally I would think this was kind of a nothing deal, but it is going to be a 2 year deal. That is what makes me think something else is in the works. He can play either middle infield position, so I would guess either Jack or Freddy is on their way out sometime this year.   Contrary to what many of you think, I believe Freddy will...
