In addition to the useful things Celebrim said above about gaming and religion, I think it should be pointed out that that both Tolkien and Lewis used fantasy as a way of exploring moral themes, what they felt were Christian themes, without engaging in commentary on the religious texts (Lewis did also write some religious commentaries, of course). If the new player is not already familiar with Narnia and Middle-Earth, somehow, it might be...

FICTIONAL Quote: Chekov's gun tells us that in a story, if we see a gun early on, we expect it to be used later. Put into this context, if your fictional environment introduces a spooky castle on a hill, it's natural for your players to assume it's significant in some way. This is true in every other fictional context your players have ever experienced throughout their lives . Why would you expect it not to be true in your...

Here are my favourites. I've choosen them because they are, above all, nice and interesting:
First a couple of really good general RPG casts, veering into indie games but really about all playing and GMing. Both really recommended. 2d6 Feet in a Random Direction Canon Puncture
And here are a couple of mainly D&D casts, but not just D&D4 Radio Free Hommlet The Tome Show Open ...

Well, the link in that screenshot works...
Trouble is, it's the wrong time of year for April Fools. So, is this for real? (I don't have a DDI subscription so I can't check it myself) The main WotC page has nothing as of 11:30 p.m. PST.
Lanefan
EDIT: a quick search of the WotC site reveals nothing matching "dnd5", ditto for the forums. I'm skeptical, for now.

Tough to explain what I look for, examples work better
I love listening to Radio Free Hommlet
I enjoy The Power Source although, alot of the time I disagree with their opinions on things, I still listen.
I enjoy the WOTC podcasts when they actually talk about the game, I just can't sit and listen to someone else play that is not entertaining to me, and I see no reason to listen ...

IMO , the T1 conversion is really uninspired. In particular, many of the encounters end up being really boring or bad 4th ed encounters, at least based on my experiences with them. We abandoned it uncompleted so that the PCs could go elsewhere and have more fun in a different dungeon. One of the issues is that 4e often plays better with larger rooms than were necessary in 1e.
I'm not ...

Ah. Good times. I didn't get into gaming until 1980 but I have fond memories of Dragon Magazine. With the instant gratification of gaming forums like this one its easy to forget what it was like to wait a month to see forum posts and responses. Thor being killed with a push spell

This is not limited to 4E ; I notice that the most interesting and useful spells and prestige classes in 3E were evil most of the time. There is a saying in our group: The Gods (the designers of the game) favor evil.
I feel your pain; I like my characters to be heroes, and nothing is more frustrating than seeing all of the evil powers/spells/prestige classes/feats getting the most power. ...

Ressurection and Drama "Don't worry, we'll rez you after this" A few years back I was playing " Temple of Elemental Evil," the psuedo baldur's gate type of RPG for the computer. I haven't played the 'real' module, so my experience is solely based on this game. I wasn't impressed with the game at all, but I remember back then realizing how ridiculous the D&D game world can be. At the ...

My experience is players who enjoy coming up with 'creative solutions' -- and I use that phrase loosely-- will do so, regardless of the system used.
Conversely, players who like plumbing the depths of the system's mechanics in order to solve a problem will do so.
And even odder observation: sometimes they're the same player. I can't be the only DM with players who are both 'creative' ...

What edition are you playing? (assuming you're playing D&D)
3.5 had a rule that diplomacy could never influence another PC's action. I'd assume 4e has something similar, but couldn't say where.
It would certainly seem that this guys fellow party members, after seeing him lie all the time, would learn not to trust him no matter how high his bluff check is.

Yes, it's a "tax" in name (by our "gaming definitions" we've all come up with over time), because many people feel they are forced to pay for it in order to maintain viability. But the question past that therefore becomes "how big of a tax"? And that's where your point is absolutely correct.
1 feat out of 17 is practically negligable. It means very little. It's like getting charged an ...
