First Code

I've had a total of 4 codes since I started workin EMS 7 months ago, and the only one that bothered me is a 43 Y/O M with a major MI. After he was brought in by the first crew, I had to go back out to his home with the second crew to pick up his son that had alcohol poisoning and was seizing. When we arrived back at the hospital with his son, I heard the 43 Y/O M's daughter yelling at the nurse that she wanted to see her dad out in...

See the simple equation: (Stupid people+people who do stupid things)=job security for us. I have a T-shirt that states something like that.

The best thing you can do now is have the RCMP do a wellness check. But since you've already done that, I don't think there is anything you can do, especially if the physician does want to step up to the plate.

What about a Community Care Access Centre. Like a homecare nurse or someone to come in and help make her home elder-proof and such.. I know we've CCACs here in ontario, and are actually encouraged to refer people to them that require it.

frmatt, It won't necessarily bother you when you do see people die. It doesn't phase me much either and I have seen a fair bit of that. Doing all that you did probably helps as well. Just be aware that this may bother you later on as well. EMSchick, There really is nothing to say in a situation like that. Just sitting and listening usually does more good initially. A day or two later, you bring up councelling as an option and refer...

Despite 4 years of experience (2 of F/R at a university campus, and 2 of non-emergent transports), it was just this past Tuesday that I had my first code. (To put a little context here, I'm a F/R with a volunteer fire/First-Response team in rural Northern Ontario.) We were paged out for SOB, and based on where the call ...

Having a bit of a dilemma up here. Lately, we have been called out two or three times a week to pick an elder up off the floor at home. She really should be in a residential home but refuses to go and the physician considers her of sound mind. We usually just pick her up and put her back to bed unless she has hurt herself...

Another nasty MVA the other night - only I was working in the ER, not on the ambulance, when pt brought in. Call came in: 16 yo female in MVA. Very panicked young caller. Few details. We take the calls at the nursing desk and dispatch from there. No 911 here. First action after dispatch - call 16 yo daughter to see if ...

I did a call yesterday... an unknown male collapses on the side of the road, approx 40 years old. First paramedic arrives on scene, gcs 10, checks HGT, its low ( 1.2mmol ), gives 20mls dextorse 50%, drops to 0.9mmol/dl, gives another 20mls, and then calls me. When I arrive his HGT is 7.2, but his GCS has not improved, I...

So I had my last clinical shift on Friday. I was in emerg and a patient came in c/o CP. CP came on suddenly 2hr previous and described as sharp radiating across the front of the chest and into the back. Patient described as 8/10 and was in moderate distress. Vitals escape me at the moment but while slightly elevated, were ...

The agency that I volunteer for covers many different county's in the area. Those county's have ambulance services too, but I a lot of times it's closer to us so we get a crew together. Back in September we were dispatched to a MVA with 1 injury and 1 fatality. A driver and I were headed to the scene, our EMT would meet us...

This is the short version... My response car was involved in an accident a few weeks ago ( I wasn't driving ), so I had the pleasure of using an ambulance as a response car. Which I didn't really mind, how I get to the calls is fairly immaterial, so long as I get there. Anyway, the ALS equipment got redistributed out of ...
