MS Config- Maximum Memory
I can't raise it. Using 32 bit vista and it keeps reseting to 2048.
I've tried safe mode, admin mode and the same results.
It resets to 2048 as soon as I click "okay" or uncheck the edit box.

do a memory test (memtest86+) and see what's the result is - 1 lap usually is sufficient!
looks like you gotta hardware issue and this is
not going away with an fresh install.

are you saying that your system locks up because (you suspect) you don't have enough ram for browsing?
i found that on my old laptop (HP dv9000, 2gb ram, 320gb hdd, vista ultimate) vista used around 65% on idle blank desktop...try ctrl + alt +
dlt and check task manager processes to see if anything is chewing up more RAM than it should.

I depends on how the burners are fed the data. If you are burning at 16x, that's 21MB/s. Times two and it's 42MB/s and if the data is on the inner edge of the hard drive and/or fragmented, that could be a problem. Also, how are the drives connected? If they are both ATAPI devices and on
the same channel, then there may be some congestion. Optical drives usually work in UDMA4 mode, which is 66MB/s...

I have no experience with the
AMD chipsets but two general possibilities are that the interface driver or the interface being run in RAID mode(BIOS setting) could obfuscate the sensors from being detected.
Try also HWMonitor: CPUID

Best advice: double check the cable, both power and data. Make sure that
the red line on the cable is facing away from the power connector (it's
also the one that connects to pin 1 on the connector). If the power
connector is above the data connection on the floppy drive you'll have to
remove the floppy drive, and look for the numbers for the pins, which
should be labeled on the PCB the pins are ...

The problem is not Vista, the problem is it is a DELL.
What are the specs of the system?
Unless it is a seriously outdated system, the problem might be with 3rd party software.
