I managed to make it work. If anyone is interested in the solution, I downloaded the ATI XP driver for the F50SL on ASUS website. This is an ASUS laptop also having a mobility HD4570. It refused to install (saying no compatible device was found), so I made the following changes in XP_INF\CX_71617.inf:
replace the line
"
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 " = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9553&SUBSYS...

Catalyst drivers no longer support the DX9 chips. Try the legacy drivers available here: ATI Catalyst? Legacy Display Driver
BTW, ATI said that they plan to release new legacy drivers shortly.

Asus should really be utterly embarrassed about their total lack of support for this machine. I mentioned it to them last month.

I'm not sure what BIOS version it is running, I will check the BIOS later as I'm installing XP at the minute :P

That's normal. ATI gives each driver release a public name by the month they were published, for example, 9.9 means September 2009. On the other hand, the internal version is different than that, and that's what you see in
DXDiag. They probably do that because when you see 9.9, you know exactly what driver-set you're dealing with, but when you read 8.5.xxx it's hard to remember when it was ...
