Better start with CPU upgrade then go straight forward to 5xxx series card depending on your budget. Although another thing , to take full advantage of 5xxx +quad core CPU later , why don't you consider looking for 30" monitor with 2560x1600 instead of the 1920x1200 one you are going to get , just a thought.

Hybrid CrossFire still around?
Published (2009-11-29 19:54:00)
If you're looking for absolutely cheapest, the newer 4350 is actually twice as powerful and a few bucks cheaper. Also, this 4650 is currently only $30 after rebate and can run circles around both 3450 and 4350. EDIT: I'm not sure if it's Hybrid Crossfire compatible, but it's got 320 stream processors while 3450 and your integrated card have only 40 each and 4350 has eighty, so it's way more powerful on it's own...

My motherboard only supports twin singular x16 PCI-Ex. It's the Gigabyte X48-DS5 motherboard which I think beats anything I've ever had especially in overclocking. Also even if I had a third slot I couldn't really use it cause I love Creative.

I would also vote for the 5850 if they weren't so expensive not to mention nearly impossible to get. There just isn't anything on the market right now that can compare to it given the alternatives either can't beat it in performance or are even more overpriced. I'm really hoping a 5790 or a 5830 gets released in Q1 2010.

This is probably way OT but will either ATi or nVidia ever produce a single card that has say 3 or 4 GPU's installed ?!? I'm thinking no, only due to the power and thermals involved in designing such a thing but what I'm really looking at is not that there will be 3 or 4 discrete GPU cores but a multi-gpu core die like you have for cpu's now

Hybrid Crossfire is only meaningful with a few of the lowest performing cards. With any gaming card involved it wouldn't help and is therefor not available. In the first half of 2010 we're likely to see budget variants of the 5000-series like 55x0/56x0 cards, rather than cards that top the current best. If you consider getting a 57x0 card then you might as well get one today.

In some cases, the 4870x2 out performs a single 5870..... but only marginally mostly... Some you can clearly see where multiple GPU's really come in handy. I think your mostly gaining DX11 capabilities and likely a little better FSAA capabilities (faster)... Overall though, it's not much of an upgrade persay... a 5970 would definitely though.

a 5850 would be something i would buy over the 4890... it basically has similar performance to the 4850x2 and is not too far behind the 5870.... but its price is bound to go down in 2010...

Oh. I have the 4870x2 and when I hook it up to my 1080p tv, I can only get 1360x768 out of it with a VGA connection. I thought it was a restriction by my television. If you work something out (or if someone else resolved this), let us know!

http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=8 55 Read the review, you won't regret it. I don't know about other cards near the price range, but basically the 5770 is an awesome card. Major question is, at what resolution will you play your games?
