All of the organs are Yummy! The bones will be hard, if not brittle. The ribs are probably still USDA CHOICE. This doesn't mean your best choice, but they are a choice.

Raw diet or genetics?
Published (2009-11-27 12:53:00)
I think raw brings out the optimum genetics behind the dog. Without artificially accelerating the growing stage with lots of carbohydrates. He should grow slow and steady to his genetically determined height and weight, without the stress on his joints and bones that comes from feeding kibble. I've heard that giant breeds fed raw will reach their potential slower than kibble fed counterparts. But they will catch up. And often surpass...

Allergic to Turkey!
Published (2009-11-26 20:56:00)
I think I rushed the turkey last year as neither dog really did well with it. New meats need to be introduced a bit at a time. Turkeys aren't chicken! Since turkey is expensive for what it is most of the year I am not going to try to work it up this year.

Lessee... #1 Meat that is preserved with a brine (salt, water) will result in rocket butt. I wouldn't! #2 Farmed meat should be free of parasites and is good to feed immediately! Game organs may be questionable in that respect and that is what should be deep frozen for some length of time. How deep your freezer gets determines how long it has to be frozen to kill most parasites.

Yesterday I caved and the pups got to have Thanksgiving lunch with us like they always have, so they had a big home cooked lunch made up of cornbread dressing (no onions), turkey (no bones or skin), smashed sweet potatoes and a little bit of cranberry sauce. Later that night I gave them pork necks as a raw mini-dinner. I figured it was ok to cheat once a year... they seriously thought that they were in heaven... and no upset tummies so...

wow there are so many pups on dogsters with allergies. I'm so sorry to everyone who goes through it. I can't imagine.
This isn't the same thing, my dog just had intolerance to proteins in kibble, the worst was chicken. But with raw food he can eat chicken raw with no problems. so you might find no allergies with raw or you might find problems with raw that aren't allergies. It's my belief (...

I get mixed reactions. My folks think it's kinda crazy that I feed raw. They use the argument... "well, our dachshunds ate grocery store food, whatever was on sale, and they lived into their high teens!" My mom's pointer mix has terrible allergies and is constantly chewing her feet, licking herself, etc. and has red staining from all the licking. Mom still won't switch her food around. She's...

I read that! I think it's awesome to learn the truth of what's in dog food, and I ignored the grain and no bones. But someone with quibbles already, i don't know if they should read the no bone part especially. Raw Meaty Bones, well what do they think youre too particular about?

On the NV note: I liked it- Toffi was eating it for a couple of weeks ( she has allergies & it really helped) but I was wondering if that was enough as far as a balanced diet. I know that is so very important in feeding Raw. I stopped feeding it to her simply because she seemed hungry more -she only got a few medallions as it's much more nutritious. She liked the taste & it seemed to like her -...

I'm onm my way out the door (grocery shopping for thanksgiving!) but of course checked dogster
Anyway maybe first see if it is allergies or just staph alone?
If I wanted to make diet simpler, I wouldn't look to kibble.
Raw is at meats basic form.. kibble is processed with additives even just a chicken and rice kibble. Edited by author Mon Nov 23, '09 1:37pm PST

How long did it take to get Brodys body used to digesting the kidneys, livers? I gave Toffi about 1/2 a chicken liver with her meal and ..well let's just say a Cream Chow with runny poos is not a good thing.

See I'm not really sure anymore because lately Maya has been having a few sensitivities to turkey too. And she is pretty allergic to chicken. Gets horrible splarts. So I'm stuck myself. Not sure what I can feed her for bone content anymore, that I can actually afford to buy... sometimes those allergies can be just down right frustrating and confusing!!

There is a lot that needs to be learned and researched b4 you jump into (if you just started) raw feeding. There is a post "So you are interested in raw feeding" or something like that. You should be feeding both bone, muscle meat and a small amount of organ meat daily (or balanced over a week). I won't say the % bcz I figure mine differently. I was lucky to have a friend who has been raw ...

Hi, my horses are trained for dressage and eventing, (lower level) they are mostly pets and trail horses now. They get free choice grass hay, we have giant bales put under a cover and eat at will. Daily they get Country acres sweet feed which is formulated for one's particular area of the country. Oddly enough, the dogs love the country acres horse grain and have been known to steal it when I am ...

Enhanced meats that have "broth" or "natural additives" added. That amounts to SALT which our dogs don't need and can cause itchy feet, diarrhea, etc. It's surprising how many meats are enhanced! Check the sodium level before you buy. The upper limit of OK is 80mg per portion.
These broths are added to plump up the meat and make it more tender and juicy. It also makes it weigh more so ...

Do you give so much variety on purpose or is it all left overs you have thrown together. I never give more than two different meats at once. I am afraid that if he has a bad reaction to something I won't know what it was. If I give him yogurt or sardines or kidney I give it to him later in the day as a snack.

Welcome! I'm glad she did so well with her first time eating the lamb shank. The bone probably helped firm up her stool.
There are a few guidelines to do a partial raw diet. First is, to feed kibble and raw 12 hours apart because they have different digestion rates. Kibble is slow to digest, while raw is faster. 12 hours is because that's up to how long kibble takes to digest.
It takes a ...
