Titling my mixed breed

What do you want to do with gir? What does Gir like to do? The choices for competition are varied and there is something there to suit everyone. The competitons we like are Rally Obedience and Freestyle. Since the venues I choose are APDT and CFF, my mixed breed and my purebred dogs compete on an equal footing. My little rescued mutt can go toe to toe against the purest of purebreds and walk away with placements and titles based on their...

He thinks his job is to beg and look pitiful. I've never had a dog that's as vocal as Junior. Don't let him get a whif of any food, 'cause you're gonna get an earful of whining and then sad puppy eyes...all while he's hobbling on 3 legs. Gotta give him credit, he's pretty darn good at his job.

Instead of socializing at the dog park where there are dogs with who knows what problems, I would look into socializing her with trusted friends dogs or dogs from obedience class. Most people are up for doggy play times if you just ask, and this way Nala can build up structured positive interactions.

So the job interview went so-so. The trainer was very impressed with how much I knew, et cetera, but 'for someone who never went to school to train.' I have a firm job offer, but only if I'll spend six weeks in training school. That's not a viable option and there are a few other reasons I think I'll be looking elsewhere for employment, but it got me to thinking... I really DON'T have much of anything, save the...

What is this type of behaviour?

I think you are treading on thin ice with your dog and this behavior. It doesn't matter whether the dog is resource guarding you or is afraid, you need to deal with it and the training is the same. That said it sounds like a fear based behavior (some would argue that all aggression is fear based and protective of something) especially since you say that the dog does not seek out people for positive attention and that it's occurring...

Sounds like she could have some issues with men. She is probably ok with yourself and your family as she's come to realize you're "safe" and taking care of her. It does sound like she's fearful of the vets...Missy is the same but without the biting. It takes about 3-4 nurses to help hold Missy steady while she receives treatment etc, i'm sure they dread us coming along. I think getting the behaviourist involved is...

Why thank you Charks. Chan was probably the most cautious pup in his litter, so I have some experience with dogs that can be a bit spooky. Plus members of his working breed tend to get in big trouble if you don't explain proper behavior to them, so I've been proactive.

Shopping for a muzzle

I understand that Cain. He sure is respected by many, but not me. I will not give him a penny for any of his tools. It's not a matter of buying a muzzle in a place that doesn't sell adversives. My favorite pet store sells 'em all. No big deal, I choose not to buy them, so I don't care. I do not like what Leerburg has to say about certain breeds and I will not give my money to him.

Oh no, dogs don't soil out of vengeance. I'd scratch that possibility out. It sounds stress related from the sounds of it. Could you find a way to make the taking of the medication pleasant (crush it if possible or give it in cream cheese instaed of hard cheese so that he gulps it up?)??

I think you could do the AKC's new mixed breed program, but your dog would have "separate but equal" titles. I know Asher's titles are through APDT, which does Rally.

For what it?s worth I played chase games with Nick, (I chased him he chased me), I played tug with him (another gundog training no-no) and entertained him with a flirt pole, also a no-no since it allegedly hardens the dog?s mouth. He sounds like he has a low growl threshhold. I was actually just wondering last night if it's possible to raise a growl threshold, by doing something like giving a reinforcer for something that would normally cause the dog to growl but just before the growling happened - does that make sense?

Belle didn't start graying 'till she was older. But, if you're certain she's a Cocker mix, I do know two black Cockers, ages 3-ish and 9-ish who are both pretty gray. More so the elder, but the 3 year old is working on a good "mustache" too. It can definitely be a breed thing. Look at most Goldens. Edited by author Wed Dec 2, '09 7:25pm PST

I think that sending the dog back would probably be the best and safest decision for you and your family. There are issues you can work through, but if you're looking for a normal, low-key companion dog, she's probably not it. I don't think you should feel guilty for wanting a dog that fits in with your family. Of course, every dog deserves a home- but what about what you deserve? You deserve...

In my personal opinion, which may have no basis in fact, aversive are something you use when needed, not as a first line of defense. I wouldn't call giving a dog a bone to stop barking an aversive any more than I would say giving a tantrum child candy is an aversive. It seems like more of reinforcer to me and looking at my text books, that does seem to be the case.

I have no rules really except they are to get off when we ask them to. I don't worry about it that much. I did move it away from the window and the barking at squirrels decreased a lot, as did the laying up on the back part..that wasn't my intent but an added bonus. I bought a microsuede and its kind of mottled with brown black and grey so it looks leatherish without the smell/ large piece of...

Tango has a few jobs: He must protect us from household appliances like dishwashers and blenders. He must herd us toward the door when its time for us to leave for work.. Tennessee's job is to try to sneak into rooms that she is not ...

Most rescues will not take a dog with a bite history. There is a liabity issue. There are exceptions, but they are far and few between. So your choices are to find one of the rescues that will take known biters, find a good behaviorist (not a trainer, a behaviorist) and work with him yourself or hold him in your arms while you send him on his way. Ash has a similar background. He was ...
