My pup got worms, again!?
Published (2009-11-12 09:11:00)
The pic is a bit overexposed...but it could be roundworms (spaghetti like?). If so, roundworms usually require TWO dewormings (if not more) in order to shut down the lifecycle...the deworming kills the adults but not the eggs, so a month or so later, more adults. SO it's not that he got them again, but that you didn't totally eradicate them the first time. Quote: Originally Posted by deege39 If you live in an apartment, or if you...

help with dog constipation
Published (2009-11-12 23:24:00)
I hope that recommendation was after the vet examined the dog. Perhaps your vet will suggest the same after examining your dog. Constipation isn't near as common in dogs and people. Nor is bolting down things and getting blockages common in people. Forget the home remedies until the vet sees your dog.

The blood test results were good and she's finally feeling better! So I guess it was just a bug of some kind. She is still taking her meds. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now. Thanks!

It was not my intention to offend anyone on this forum and with the exception of one member that unjustly disrespected other members, I have never written a harsh word to anybody. I am a member of many dog forums and thank God have never invoked such anger and hostility. I am truly shaken by the reaction to my post and after rereading it, I do see that I could have been a whole lot better at choosing my words so I humbly apologize for the...

Finding the right dog food
Published (2009-11-09 00:22:00)
I think Natural Balance is an "all life stages" food. So you could give it to your puppy, no problem. Many large-breed owners do not feed puppy food at all anyway. Innova is an excellent food. How quickly did you do the food switch? He may need more time to get used to it. Runny stools can also be caused by feeding too many calories for the dog's needs. The large-breed formula might be more calorie dense than the small...

Please don't take the comment of one person to reflect the beliefs of the entire forum. I also prefer people choose a shelter animal before a breeder simply for the number of dogs in a shelter and because mopst breeders aren't as responsible as you have been, but I do give you props for breeding responsibly. you did all the proper testing, you had a mentor, you consuted with your vet... you are not a BYB'er or some fly by night...

Arthritis?

I'd stay away from aspirin. I agree with the joint supplements and the adequin. One more thing make sure your dogs are not overweight. How do you tell? Here is a chart to help determine if your dog is at a good weight.... http://www.placervillevet.com/canine...0condition.htm

lulusmom .... No I will not get my dogs fixed until I feel like I want to. I breed responsible and the pups get a good home. With my family members at least I know they are taken care of and I can see them anytime I want. If one of my family members decides they NO LONGER want the pet I would gladly take the pup back into my home because I would never let one of my pups go to a pound. I care to much about my dogs and would never let anything...

What more could I do?
Published (2009-11-12 11:06:00)
Yeah, the Hurricane dumped water on us the entire day before this all happened... So, with his poor eating habits lately and on-top of the fact he couldn't poo in the rain, I'm pretty sure that was the cause of this bug. He's been drinking plenty of water, he ate very well and since that first episode the other morning, he hasn't had any more watery-poo or thrown-up. His fever is gone and so is the chills... Thank...

It absolutely helped my 14 year old Aussie have better and additional life. She would have been lame and in terrible pain.
Rimadyl gave her more to her life for longer and I would recommend it to any dog owner.

They could potentialy get an internal parasite for rabbit dropings, but they don't usually have the symptoms you've described. Have you talked to yor vet about the rabbits and have they run a fecal or any other tests on yor dog(s)?

I give Alvin glucosamine and chondroitin with MSM. I believe I can tell the difference in his level of stiffness when he takes it every day versus when I run out and don't replace it immediately. Of course, I could just be seeing what I want to see!
Downside: cost. I get my supplements at Costco, so it's better than the pet store, but it still costs more than if I weren't giving him ...

the cause of chronic diarrhea can be difficult to diagnose. did your vet test for giardia? the "usual" fecal float won't detect this, it takes a different test. metronidazole is probably what was prescribed which, i think, is what is used to treat giardia but it takes more than just a few days of treatment. how long was he on this medication?
any chance he is getting into something when ...

You can try PetzLife oral gel ... I use that on my gal. It slowly softens the tartar so you can brush it off.

Ivomec Dosage for Mange I was going to buy "Ivomec 1 % Solution - 50 ml" from kvvets.com that's selling for under 40 dollars to treat my dogs mange.

Awwww...hon, I feel for you. You will no doubt, get some replies, saying, "Dogs are expensive...you should have money for these emergencies!!!"
Well, the reality is, life is esxpensive. Sure, we need to provide for our dogs, but when unexpected expenses surface it makes things very scary, to say the least.

I'll give you feedback..
What are your goals in breeding? Have the parents both been checked for genetic problems? Cardiac, Patella, Thyroid, CERF?
Why aren't you asking your breeder mentor these questions?

A good glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM supplement can help. I like the one from www.springtimeinc.com . You can use human supplements, too. They're usually cheaper. If the arthritis is really bad, a vet can give you a prescription. Adequan injections or prescription pain relievers ( Rimadyl, etc.) seem to be the most common.

Our dog Oreo passed almost 2 years ago with cancer. Exactly one year before that she was diagnosed with a grade 2 mast cell tumor in her chest. Surgery couldn't remove it all cause it was around her windpipe. That last year the cancer progressed but she was a real trooper. Still very active & happy until the last couple of days.
She was the best dog ever. It's great there is better ...

I just know small dogs shouldn't be given ACE ( Acepromazine). They have a higher risk of a reaction to it.

Get him a food-puzzle toy, maybe. Keep him on leash in the house too, if he likes to tear around inside.

Check his temperature. If it is over 102, I would see the E-vet if you can.
If he does not have a fever, and you can fast him, I would not give him any solid foods.
I would encourage him to drink some clear broth and/or pedialyte. If it were my dog, and I had metronidazol, I would be giving that until I could get to a vet.
I hope he is feeling better soon.

I'm not aware of a commercial food that meets that criteria. Do you know what kind of meat she's allergic to? I can't believe she's allergic to ALL meats. What kind of meat was in the Avoderm formula she was on (they don't have a meat-free formula as far as I know)?
The grain-free foods might be gluten free. EVO, Taste of the Wild, etc. But of course they have a lot of meat in them. I do ...
