Post # 3 I've always known/heard of a 'step side' as usually other than a 'step side', but have also heard it called a 'flair side'.. On the other hand a 'smooth side' (Never heard that one before ) I've heard called as 'fleet side' .. 'Style side' ..'Classic side' ... Or a 'Well body' Probably a marketing thing .. Different mfg's called them by...

Post # 23 Dash gauges different from 81-82 and 83+? I don't think so; all of those years coulda had either full gauges OR idiot lights for the 2 lower ones. (temp and oil pressure) depending on "options".

Post # 35 Suck it up and tell him to make it right. You'll be without your truck longer if you're learning a tranny on the fly, even a TF. Tell him to make it right, go to the junkyard, buy a tranny with high miles and learn on that. Just my $.02

The step side tailgates is different. The other tailgates have a latch when closed the step sides have a chain on the sides to help close if i am not mistaken. There is other things also different. The 94 trucks is a whole other truck also

Looks pretty clean, considering. Right door looks like that could be fixed with a suction-cup dent puller. Some minor dings that should be easy to fix. Any nasty rust anywhere? Engine looks like it has some new parts, so someone was trying to keep up on it. Does it run and is it driveable? Any major probs?

Have you looked inside the carb at all? A rebuild kit is a good investment, I rebuilt the
2bbl Holley in my uncles '74 and found (rtv) gasket maker in the accelerator pump lever. Took it (the RTV) out and it ran great. It might also be in the ignition. Take one of the spark plugs out and hold it(by the plug wire!) ...

Shift linkage wear/ adjustment is a definate place to look.
It has 2nd gear with the selector in 2nd, correct? If not the linkage for the kickdown band may have fallen apart do to loose adjustment jambing the rooster comb (shift linkage on the valve body) so that park won't engage correctly.

tires, can be traded, alternator and tranny depend on what motors. and trailor hitch depends if bumpers are the same
