Thank you again. Let me rephrase the question in a way the enables a more palatable answer. Given a standard engineered LVL 3"x24" what span would it support for a floor of 40psf DL+LL, and 50psf DL+LL. Quote: you cant create your own glu lam sitting in your garage with a bucket of adhesive and pieces of plywood. We will just have to disagree on this one. I have glued wood "in my garage" where the wood ripped apart before...

Plywood gusset - how to attach?

The HVAC contractor is responsible for the cut truss. Make him get engineer approved repair and do it at his cost. He had no business cutting that truss. Trusses are not to be cut, period. You are being very generous if you let him off the hook.

Plywood gusset - how to attach?

Or if you have already let the contractor off the hook via negotiation, you could drill through your plywood gusset and the metal web fastener and use some lag bolts to hold the whole thing together at that end. You proceed at your own risk, but each individual truss doesn't have to carry a huge load. They're designed to work as a system and spread the load. So all you need to do is restore the vertical strength of the cut truss.

You could remove the subflooring and plane down the offending joist.

Framing new wall

I'm planning on building a new divider wall in the basement. It has a finished ceiling(drywall). I want to build it on the floor and then stand it up and nail it.How much shorter than the actual existing height should I build it so I can still stand it up? When I shim it, will it make a difference if I put the shims under the bottom plate or on top the top plate? Should the wall be real tight or should it be a little loose to allow for...

I worked with a carpenter who used to build walls like that. If the floor and ceiling are level, you can do it. Subtract the thickness of 2 2x4s, from the height and cut the studs to that size.

most, if not all engineered lumber manufacturers stop at 18" depth so my software won't do a 24" deep calculation. but a 3.5"x18" LVL will make up to 28' within your situation if that helps at all. but you cant really assume from that information that a 24" beam made out of plywood and wood glue would make that span. basically, you could probably rationalize something like that in your own head and it may...

frame on top of flooring?
Published (2008-11-15 13:22:00)
I didn't know where to post this, but here goes: I am planning to put a door into an interior wall where there is currently a larger opening. The floor is a real wood floor, so the question I have is: Should I frame the new wall (surrounding new door frame) right on top of the wood floor (screwing through the wood floor and into the subfloor), or should I cut the space out of the floor for the new bottom plate and screw directly into the...

Honestly, it's far easier to frame the wall by attaching the top plate to the ceiling and the bottom plate to the floor and then adding the studs. Use screws to attach the studs to the plates. Wishing you success.

I have another one of those girder/beam span questions. But what I don’t understand is with the ease of creating your own beams and the availability of engineering software why I can’t find any tables on line for girder size versus span length for something like shown at the link below. Please look at the drawing at this link for the following girder questions. If you have one of those software ...

I will be enclosing my 17'X22" rear porch to use as a four seasons room, the existing concrete slab has glued outdoor carpet. I would like to know if I could just lay subflooring over the carpet rather than tackle the job of removing the carpet and adhesive.

In replacing the air handler in my attic the AC guy cut the truss to get the room he needs. Anyways after some negotiating and banging on the walls we came to a compromise. The AC company will remove the bigger air handler and replace with a smaller air handler that would fit without the need for the cut truss web member, and I will install the cut web in it's original configuration. i want to put ceramic flooring in the kitchen but I have a high spot caused by one of the supporting jack posts in the basement. I have heard that you can gradually turn the adjustment on the jack slightly over a period of time to alleviate the problem. I know some cracks in the plaster may occur as a result. The total height the jack would have to be lowered would be about 1/4 inch. Any advise ...

I have a stick framed ranch with hip roof. There is a 24' long interior wall that sets 8' in from the exterior wall that I would like to remove. http://drop.io/rbarry2 This is a link to pics showing supports leading down to this wall in the attic. If this is enough info I would like to get opinions on beam size and how to handle this.

I'm about to install tile in my bathroom. I've put down a brand new plywood subfloor, which is fairly level, although I've noticed one 2'x2' section in the corner where it is off by as much as 1/2". I plan to put cement board over the plywood, then my tile. Can I use leveling compound over the plywood and under the cement board? I have never used it before, but I don't want a non-level ...

Please help!! I have not been able to find much info on tiling or hardwood subfloor requirements over steel joist construction. I want to change our house from all carpet and linoleum. I have been Googling and about half of the sites I find say you can attach the CB directly to the subfloor, and the other half say to use a layer of thinset between the subfloor and the CB. WHich is it? And why will a level of thinset help? Lastly, is there a certain trowel size I should use for this layer of thinset? Thanks!
