disabling windows firewall worked for me. remember to switch it back on afterwards if you dont have a 3rd party firewall.

Consider this: Whenever a new error condition appears on your computer, it
is almost certain that there was some change to the computer soon before the
problem began.
Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.

ok, i have no idea how it was fixed. i tried to uninstall all of those
components again, did some manual and automatic file and registry cleaning,
and windows update offered me to install everything again, and it updated
fine.
hopefully, this situation will hold till i get a new OS (maybe windows 7)....

Yes. Almost the same problem. The Service Pack 3 update (which takes forever)
gets near the end and errors out. Then everything has to be undone (which
takes forever) and the computer has to restart. The update notification icon
is always on and the SP3 always crashes. There is some way of getting help
after the crash but it seems ...
