Your mail account settings are correct. "Unknown error" is usually caused by interference from an antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running? As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off, although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects. In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled. Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons...

Do you get an error message when you try to receive? If so, right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here. We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message. If no error message, delete that mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.

When I click on the icon on the desktop it just opens right up. How can I make it ask me for a password? Is the message still in your inbox at the account's webmail page?
Do such problems persist if you disable or uninstall MW?

Are you sure the sender is including them properly, I guess if this
applies to ALL emails the problem may be yours but if you mainly get
them like this from one sender it may be his or hers. If it is something
that was working okay before we don't want to lead you up the wrong path
it it's a sender issue.

McAfee is known to cause problems in Vista. Sometimes they don't show up
immediately.
Replace McAfee with the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html , and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender. Disabling McAfee is not enough. You need to completely uninstall
it.

I assume you are reading each message in its own window by double-
clicking on it. If so, when done reading that message, close the window,
then delete that message from the message list pane.
You may also want to turn off the preview pane:
View, Layout, uncheck "Show preview pane".

Don't keep the error message a secret. It is the key to fixing what
is wrong.
