  Your mail account settings are correct. "Unknown error" is usually caused by interference from an antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running? As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off, although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.   Do you get an error message when you try to receive? If so, right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here. We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message. If no error message, delete that mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.

I assume you are reading each message in its own window by double- clicking on it. If so, when done reading that message, close the window, then delete that message from the message list pane. You may also want to turn off the preview pane: View, Layout, uncheck "Show preview pane".
