Do you get a single beep from the onboard speaker? It could be worth trying another PSU first, as replacing this is less traumatic.

Mum wants a Netbook

I don't really see the point of netbooks unless a weight saving is a significant advantage for you. For my truly mobile requirements a PDA with wireless is fine for me. If I want to do serious surfing it's a laptop or my dual-22"-screen tower.

Advice re new pc with windows 7

Can't see why not. It is still for sale from Microsoft and so is Windows 7 compatible. You need to check that your printer is compatible and/or has new drivers or can be made to work on Windows 7.

Sounds like they're pulling a fast one, that said what about the likes of Intel GMA series who say 348MB of memory yet it is taking it all from the system. As for fighting it, the card installed is a £25 card. I bought a fanless model when my old card when belly up as it was so cheap. If you think he will be doing any more serious gaming you might want to look at a better card, it will be less than £50 to upgrade it to something a...

My two pence worth, Download all the .exe's that you need for your new security. As ruddiger says delete one of them (AVG my choice to bin). Download the removal tool from McAfee and follow the instructions before running it. As said with Vista you should need no other firewall. Malwarebytes is a good program for occasional scanning and can sometimes remove malware that some others can't. Quote: Can you guys be so kind to recommend...

It really depends what you want it for? I myself prefer a tower, though Laptops seem more popular expecially in Curry's as I was in there the other day and they didn't have any desktops.

I would never spend over £100 on a case. Got a decent one for £40 with plenty of room and bays inside. I would post a link to it but it's not on the Maplin website.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the following conundrum... I'm trying to get Wake on LAN (WoL) to work across my home LAN and so far I've had no joy whatsoever. I'm using the following equipment: - iPhone 3GS (connected to Router via wireless LAN) and iNet WOL App. - Sky Netgear DG834GT Router with standard Sky Firmware. - PC with Asus ...

Sounds interesting - I'm assuming this a cross between the Chrome browser and the Android OS for smart phones but as a standalone version for PCs. I wonder if you will be able to get LiveCDs like for Linux distros, to check it out without committing to a proper install?

Different apps can utilise any one of the cores. Some can even use more than one core at once. Depends what you want the pc for really. If you do lots of video encoding then an i7 is the way to go. If it is games you are better off with the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400. Custom PC did a benchmark on it earlier in the year, and it battered the i7 chips and is £100 cheaper...

It could be done for £500, but only if you self-build or get somene who can do it for you on the cheap. What level of gaming do you want? Crysis on max settings, or something a little more realistic? You'd probably only get a base unit for your budget. No monitor.

Did you use heatsink compound on the new CPU? If so, if you put too much on it can stop the CPU cooling properly.

You're really cutting all the corners at £300. And you can forget XP....that's two OSs ago and computers with XP cost more than ones with Vista/Windows 7. I really would try to stretch the budget another 30-50 quid, it will make a big difference. And try and get a machine with Windows 7 on rather than Vista, it will run much faster on a low spec machine. Having said...
