The plastic cover does come off & on... but the look of the scrapbook cover is plastic leather. The cheapy ones I also decided to use brown instead of black. I dug thru my papers, stickers, punches, etc... & found some cute stuff. As a guy I have to say those are some very nice looking kits. For what it's worth I tend to like layouts that are simple, and make use of whitespace...think in terms of how Picasa/Google designs their interfaces. You mentioned the plastic cover, I just assumed it would come on/off and not sure how you would use. I don't think there is anything that you "must" put on the cover. Totally depends on what you want. The main part of the album is inside, so I would want the cover to give an indication what is inside, and to look nice and fun, but I don't think it needs to be overdone. I like the idea of personalising the cover - although I would probably think about wear and tear when choosing how to do it. Depending on the surface, stickers or rub ons to make a title might look nice.

I have a private blog on blogger. No one can read it expect for people I give permission to. I haven't tried any other sites, though, so I don't know if there's anything better or not. Hope that helps!

Are you planning on doing it digitally/paper/hybrid? My main advice would be to keep things simple. The albums I have done usually have a consistent colour scheme and sometimes very similar layouts. Are you wanting to get a book made or go with a more traditional album? Also think about what size might be more convenient for him/her. 12x12 is nice but quite bulky. A smaller album might be easier ...

Do you take as many as your card will hold? I empty my camera often and have never filled a card. Do you save them all? Nope. I immediately trash the really bad ones and near duplicates.
