what dvd codec do I need?

You can try codecs pack Shark007. You have to install regular 32-bit and then install 64-bit package. You should then be able to play any kind of file in MCE. http://shark007.net/

I did. Nothing. I then changed it back. Strange how I can still access those files through WMC (videos photos etc..) but just NOT through the explorer.

No, shark.007 does not work. I did install the 32bit first and then 64 bit. I played another movie, and WMP says "movie not for this region" I exchanged the video cable to vga instead of DVI-D, still same errors. Do you think a new dvd drive will do it? My Benq 1620 was hacked to region free. Edit: I tried to do autoGK yesterday, and the xvid does not have sound. I am now re-doing it and there seems to have sound, and it also...

Have you done a system restore to a point prior to when the problem occurred?

Hard drive replacement question
Published (2009-12-12 12:38:00)
I'm not absolutely certain how paranoid the restore software and partition are set up. But they are not supposed to restore to another motherboard, and they may or may not be able to restore to another hard drive. Is there any reason you can't simply use an external USB drive? 1 terabyte drives are available for around $175 now, and a few 2 terabyte units are showing up around $250.

You can try this command that works in Vista to fix the same problem. No guarantee it will also work in Win 7 but it's worth a shot as they are both based on the same code. Just to be on the safe side, I'd make a restore point before hand. Run a command prompt as an administrator (right-click on it in accessories and click "Run as Administrator") then enter the following command line exactly as written: net...

It's nothing to do with hardware or drivers. Your drive probably came with some OEM dvd playing software. Install that and you'll get the codecs for WMP (or any program) on your system to play DVD's. WMP already has a standard MPEG-2 decoder, but it needs to know you're "authorized" to watch encrypted DVD's, so it needs a specific DVD codec from WinDVD, Cyberlink, etc. Otherwise just use VLC or...

Can't open Office 2007 files
Published (2009-12-16 11:05:00)
I had the same thing happen with the Office 2010 beta. In my case, the solution was to activate Windows (it wasn't activated originally as I'd just done a reformat. It might not be the same issue, but it's worth checking anyways. Click Start, type system and select the System item underneath Control Panel. Look towards the bottom of that window and it should tell you if it's activated or not (and let you activate it from...

Well it seems you have to rule out MagicISO so I'd uninstall it and see if the problem persists. Don't know what MagicISO is but if its creating a virtual drive and you are having file access issues then it sure sounds like it might be the culprit.

"Best" is a relative term. It depends what criteria you would use to define "best". Already it's clear that system resource use is an important criterion for you, perhaps more important than having the absolute best virus detection. There are plenty of objective, systematic testing results available at sources such as PCmag.com, PCworld.com, etc., which compare major apps. I suggest you ...

If you want to restore to factory default you're going to need a windows install disc, or create the restore discs. Yes, you'll need 17. Unless this hidden D: has the restore program on it (as it probably does if it's what I think it is) When the system first boots up, look for an option to restore. If it's there, you should be able to use a program like Norton Ghost (or a ton of other ...
