What? No. One cable box coupled with one HDPVR can record every channel you subscribe to. And since the HDPVR comes with the IR blaster you refer to, I don't see how that is an issue either. The advantage of the HDPVR over the other tuner cards is that it can encode up to a 1080i signal which the internal cards can't (since they would only accept an RG6, composite or S-Video input). I guess I'm failing to see your point. A cable...

Why bother transcoding? Hard drive space is cheap - you can get 1.5TB hard drives for just over $100 and they can hold about 200 movies.

recneps... Agreed I think it is going to be a bit of trial and error. I have just had the 6131 installed.. went to set up with Window's Media Centre though had an error code, something about needing an IR receiver. Will purchase and then test the 6131 with the dual tuners - see if it allows me to record while watching another program as stated.

an IR blaster lets WMC change the channel on the box to record (otherwise it's stuck just recording whatever channel you set it as) I don't have one myself (antenna only currently), so hopefully someone else can help on that one (I'm sure there are threads on IR blasters too, somewhere)

Other than disk space, compression has other advantages; transportability, faster access to the file (removing of menus, warning, coming soon, etc), easier management for metadata, etc. Compression should be made from hd and not from dvd drive. I use DVDdecrypter to copy video_ts to hard drive and then HandBrake to compress if required; some movies are kept as is and other are compressed. With my tv setup (42" at 8') I do not see...

No, connecting a hard drive to the 6131 will only allow you to record for use with the Bell PVR. The contents of that hard drive will be encrypted and not usable on your Media Center. Pete

thanks, might give the wdtv live a try with a dlink dwa140. hopefully stuff will settle down with the .wtv file format soon so that that can be added in future firmware updates.

Can you temporarily hook it up with the composite cable, (yellow)? It should default to 480i and hopefully you can get into the menu and select a different setting. Not sure if 1080i would be selectible with the compostie but you could change it to 480p from auto and swap over to component then go to 1080i.

You need two audio tracks. I use an AppleTV and the 1st audio track is AAC the second is AC3 Handbrake 0.9.4 does this fine with the AppleTV preset.

The official MP4 spec doesn't support 5.1 channel audio, only 2-channel AAC audio. I believe that there is a way to get AAC 5.1 with iTunes, but it's not well supported. From what I've seen you have two options:
1. Encode to MKV, which is a container that allows h264 video and 5.1 channel audio
2. Encode to MP4, but mix your 5.1 audio down to 2 channels using Dolby Pro Logic 2 (which when ...

Do you have either a PS3 or an Xbox 360? If so, you're already almost there if you're looking at a Windows Home Server (such as the MediaSmart). The MediaSmart comes with TwonkyMedia (aka PVConnect) pre-installed. There are also other freeware options such as TVersity and PS3 Media Server (if you have a PS3). In other words, if you have a console, you've already got the extender.

Simplest solution would be an IR extender which would allow you to use the same type of remote(s) you're already using. There are wired and wireless versions available but since you're running wires anyway then I would recommend a wired solution since they tend to be more reliable.
Your other option would be a universal remote with RF capability. This will cost you a bit more but would be a...

For HTPC use, set video card output to 59.94Hz if available. Some drivers just name it 60Hz. Other drivers have separate settings for 59.94Hz and 60Hz. In that case, set it to 59.94Hz or else 60Hz setting may give you jitter playing TV streams (speaking from personal experience). Do NOT set to 30Hz.

Hi DJDiggler, in your quest for an application have you tried Media Center Master? My point is not to say it is better but to know if you have compared them. I am currently using MCM with wich i am satisfied but always willing to get a better one but tired of trying and testing. Thanks.

You shouldn't have an issue with recording as that is just dumping a bitstream to disk. Playback is just an issue of playing back the recorded file. Since ATSC uses the MPEG-2 codec which is not very tasking on a CPU you should have no issues. Trying to playback MPEG-4 HD files may be a different story.
