The Sony H20 is a fine camera but there are a few things you should be aware of. One is that the camera is 38mm at the wide end, which isn't very wide. In contrast, the Panasonic FZ35 is 27mm at the wide end, which gives you more flexibility. Another issue is that the H20 has a maximum aperture of f3.5, compared to the f2.8 in the Panasonic. This limits the ability of the H20 to let light in, which means that it must shoot at higher...

Canon SX20 IS, Olympus SP-590 UZ, Panasonic FZ35, and Sony HX1 each have slightly different features. In my view they are all decent choices. Each design handles its controls slightly differently. Find them in the store to play with for a bit and that little experience will likely cross one or two off your list. Different strokes for different folks. Kelly

Re: Nikon D3000 for product shots? Hi Thanks for the tips. The camera I have myself at the mo is canon a620 - really old now I would probably guess! Do you really think the non DSLR cameras that you mentioned will be as good as the D3000? I have a light box but no lights or diffuser. Any advice on those items? Thanks Louise

Thanks. I understand where you're coming from. But would it be good to take a more variable lens approach on buying. Meaning if I have about $1,000-1,200 to spend, I would get a affordable entry level body $500 or $600, and then spend the rest to try to get an assorted 2 or 3 extra lenses. Given that how now a days entry level bodies produce great images, so do consumer level lenses these days. This way I would have a strong setup for...

The best small ultrazoom camera is probably the Panasonic ZS3 (also known as the TZ7). Here's the link to DCR's review.
http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/d...onic+lumix+ zs3
Other good small long zoom cameras are the Panasonic ZS1 (AKA the TZ6), the Canon SX200is, the Sony DSC H20 and the Samsung HZ10w (AKA the WB500).
If you're willing to explore larger long zoom cameras, there...

The two Canons you mentioned are kind of large and heavy, especially the SX20is. They are good all around ultrazooms, though.
Other possibilities you may wish to consider are the Panasonic ZS3 and FZ35, the Olympus SP590UZ and the Sony DSC H20.

I am definitely open, but have been looking at Canon and Sony since they seem to be best for low-light.
Very few point and shoot (non-DSLR) cameras are good at no-flash pictures in low light. Sony and Canon make a couple of the good ones, as does Fuji.
The top low light cameras, from least expensive to most expensive, are the Fuji F70EXR...

Do you want a camera that's water and shock resistant? Should your camera have a long zoom? A small rechargeable battery? Please fill out the "Which Camera Should I Buy" sticky so that we are better able to help you.

Of the three cameras you mentioned, the Sony DSC H20 will take the best low light shots.
However, consider the Fuji F70EXR, an ultrazoom with 10x optical zoom that's smaller than the H20 and about the same price, which will take even better low light shots.
But neither camera will do a great job in low light from a distance when the zoom is used. That's because using the zoom decreases...

Some cameras that will probably be at the high end of your price range but are very good all around are the Panasonic ZR1 (8x optical zoom), Sony DSC T90 (very small and thin but doesn't have a wide angle) and the Canon SD940IS (very small and thin, excellent build quality).
Other, less expensive possibilities are the Sony W290 and the Samsung SL820, but I don't think they have the overall ...

If your interest is mainly excellent picture quality, the Canon G11 and S90 are probably the top point and shoot cameras. They are quite expensive though - for about the same price you can buy the Pentax K2000 or Olympus E520, two very good entry-level DSLR's that have even better picture quality than the G11 or S90.
The Panasonic FZ35 is an excellent ultrazoom but its picture quality is ...

One thing I guess I should add. My primary uses for the camera are for family events (christmas, birthdays, weddings, etc and both indoors and out), concerts, and around the house ( inside and out) pets and children photos.

The Sony W290 is a good camera but it's not at its best in low light situations. The Canon SD1200is takes better low light pictures, in my opinion, and is within your budget.

The Canon SX20is does not use a lithium ion battery - it uses 4 AA's.
The Nikon P90 is a very good ultrazoom with a very long lens and a lithium ion battery. The Panasonic FZ35 is another very good ultrazoom within your price range that uses a lithium ion battery and takes good pictures in all shooting situations. Most reviewers pick the Panasonic over the Nikon.

You have several categories of cameras to consider.
One is the advanced point and shoots. There are certain point and shoots that do better in low light than others. The Fuji F70EXR is a relatively inexpensive compact ultrazoom. At its discount price of under $250, it's a pretty incredible bargain. While not outstanding at low light it's better than 95% of the point and shoots out there ...

Re: Please help.need digital camera to take pics of kids
Questions about camera selection are supposed to be posted on the Which Camera Should I Buy forum, not here in the News forum. Anyways, that is a lot of requirements for a modest price camera. The Canon A2100 IS may be as close as you can come -

The Panasonic FZ35 (FZ38 in the UK) is a great ultrazoom camera that takes very good pics in all lighting conditions and takes very close macros. It's somewhat less expensive than the Sony HX1 and, while similar in size, is considerably lighter in weight. Also, like the HX1, the FZ38 has a long zoom lens and full manual exposure controls. The FZ38 uses a lithium ion rechargeable battery that ...
