It's not even an issue of it being US law. A fair trial is needed for a free society. You start with not giving the obvious serial killer/rapist a trial and slowly work down towards kiddy rapists. Next it's possession of kiddy porn, followed by obscenity and decency laws. You must have a trial in all cases.

What I gathered from it is that maybe the parents were trying to make it look like the baby disappeared, and when the coast was clear, they were probably going to sell it. Getting busted selling a baby is big trouble. But lying about your baby disappearing, is not quite as big trouble. See if you get away with the lesser crime, then move on to the bigger one.
