Diabetes Success Stories

Thanks for posting the link. I'm so thrilled to have a type 1 pregnancy success story in there. I know Elizabeth was terrified she wouldn't be able to have kids when she was diagnosed. I hope it gives others hope that it's possible for them, too. And what a cute photo.

It certainly is a good photo. It's hard enough for a woman going through pregnancy, but being a diabetic is very difficult indeed. She sure did well though and the result is fabulous!

oh ofcourse, but I was just replying to the "if Faustman's trials do stop the autoimmune attack but our pancreas are burnt out beyond regeneration" scenario. The trials I mentioned are supposedly being planned as part of a 2-step treatment. One drug to stop the autoimmune attack and one drug to regenerate beta cell mass.

I am a bit surprised at the seemingly low identification rate of less than 5%; I would have expected it to be somewhat higher. A wonderful service nonetheless, and the recognition is well-deserved.

Wow, something like this would have been a big help to me 22+ years ago. I was diagnosed in late April 1987. At the beginning of the month I donated blood at school. I had already begun to feel tired and was using the bathroom a lot more but at that point I was still able to do my daily activities. Knowing then that my BG was high means I could have seen a doctor earlier and avoided DKA and a weeklong hospital stay.

This seems to be an obvious point at which to check for high blood sugars, since they have to take a small blood sample anyway. Considering the cost of test strips, though, it would have to be a considerable expense. I also wish they had done this in my area, since I have been donating blood for quite a few years before I was diagnosed.

Dr. Faustman's lab just released an update on their clinical trial for a real, bona fide diabetes cure! We had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Faustman last year and were extremely impressed. The newsletter has great info on how a stage 2 clinical trial works and an explanation of what the BCG vaccine does that may qualify it as a cure (or part of one). Here's a brief excerpt.
