JoJo, You came to the right place for support. I think I speak for the rest of the forum in stating we all have a phobia when it comes to dentists. I am much like you....and others here....bad experience with a non-caring dentist from childhood which led to not even going for fear of pain or disdain. Finding the right dentist is the magic it takes and also taking that first step to keep the appointment. A good dentist will not make you feel...

I doubt the cavity needs serious attention and there is no need for dental treatment for a 5 year old to be traumatic or painful with the right dentist BUT I am concerned about what you have been told about no anaesthetic. You need to clarify this and take him elsewhere (pediatric dentist maybe? who is likely to have much better injection technique) if their plan is indeed to expect him to put up with pain during drilling. This is the last...

Right now I'm looking at sedation techniques for the removal of 4 wisdom teeth. In short, the idea of being knocked out scares the living crap out of me! My best option is IV sedation and I think that's what they're offering me, but in a hospital setting. But, from what I hear IV is similar to GA in the sense you don't remember much, if anything. That's my issue with it. I figure the only way I could go through with IV...

Hey Brit, He didn't say why he did the injections before but when I had spoken to him about all my problems I did tell him that when I had those teeth out all that time ago, I was not numb and after that I didn't go back for 14 years and he did say I need a few painfree appointments with him to help me realise that will never happen again. I started panicking as soon as he said to have the injections first!! But he said we need to do...

Thanks Odette. So today I was parked outside the dentists early in the morning waiting for them to open. Yesterday, it was uncomfortable: side of my face hot, splitting headache and aching neck. Ugh. But the pain is too defuse to point to a specific tooth. So I jumped in the Chair and the nice kindly dentist had a look around and took an Xray of the cursed area and reveals a nice cauldron of nasties brewing away at the root of my Number 5...

I really feel for you as I had a similar experience after a root canal on an upper pre-molar, I had a bump that remained for A YEAR AFTERWARDS! It was gradually getting smaller and I was told by my dentist that some people's teeth just take a longer time to heal up, etc. In the end I saw another dentist who said that the original root canal was fine, but he suggested using a stronger dressing material (the stuff they put inside the empty...

Hi Pippin,
You've done a great job if you haven't lost any teeth yet and trust me I know how hard it is to hear those words-"it has to come out". Unfortuanetly I've lost quite a few teeth for various reasons starting in high school. When I lost a lower molar at a fairly young age, my wisdom tooth shifted forward and took its place. That was a good thing. Until recently when I had 5 more teeth...

Hi mcfl,
i haven't had a cyst in my mouth but you might want to tell him about me, in April I had all my top teeth taken out.
Last week i had my implants but in, but that is not the point.
What i want to say is the procedure lasted 4 hours in the chair, so 90 minutes tell him, will be fine, really it will.
Also, and don't read any further if it makes you feel icky!

Hi Jay,
It's not at all unusual to have a dental phobia...as forums like this will testify to.
I also think that almost all dentists are aware of dental phobia. There are many these days that cater specifically for anxious/nervous/phobic clients.
My advice would be to e-mail or phone (if you feel able to) or write to a dentist in your area. See if you can find an advert for one ...

A root canal was probably one of the most terrifying prospects I thought I'd ever encounter. I remember thinking if I ever needed that done I think I'd rather have the tooth pulled or maybe stand in front of an on coming train..I'm nor joking, I was absolutely terrified. Strange really because I'd never had one and had no direct experience to draw on.
Fast forward to June this year. I had a ...

Having someone 'listen out' for your welfare whilst under sedation is no bad thing but it's probably not achievable in a hospital setting.
It would be more possible in a dental office but remember your relatives might not want to witness actual surgery even if the dentist/surgeon were willing to have them present..but they could listen at the door to make sure it sounded like you were ...

Hi everyone. This looks like a friendly place so a deep breath from me and I'l jump in!
I've been dental phobic all my life and caused such a fuss as a child that my parents stopped taking me to the dentist when I was still very young. I plucked up the courage to go for a check up when I was in my late teens as i had tooth ache and needed some small fillings. And I never went back again.

I called around....for my kids.Yes,I used them as guinea pigs to feel out
the places.Even the dentist commented and chuckled about that.I did it that
way though to see how he reacted to different ages and happened to overhear
the different ways they use to calm their fearful patients.Of course, doing
it that way has delayed any work on my teeth(not that that would have
mattered to me,heck I've ...

Sounds like you have had good experiences with a dentist that you have come to like and trust. and I would like you to know that you will be able to find a new dentist in your new area that will also be sensitive, caring and compassionate so that you have positive dental experiences again.

to you and your mother
I'm not a dentist but I don't see why she couldn't have i/v sedation or GA and have everything done at once assuming you can finance it regardless of any insurance constraints.
Also we have some cracking recommendations for dentists in New York such as Michael Krochak but he would probably be at the pricey end. He has TheWand which is a painfree way of giving the local...
