"Plans to store information about every phone call, email and internet visit in the United Kingdom have in effect been abandoned by the Government. The Home Office confirmed the "Big Brother" scheme had been delayed until after the election amid protests that it would be intrusive and open to abuse. Although ministers publicly insisted yesterday that they remained committed to the scheme, they have decided not to include the...

My suspicions re accuracy are slightly raised by the statement that 'In frustration, Sue finally thrust a tenner over the counter and walked out with the booze - despite being warned she was breaking the law.' I do wonder whether the mum was confrontational, and maybe even looked drunk; and whether she'd been aggressive in the shop before - and all this is being omitted. After all, she could have simply gone alone to another...

I've had a lot of people in my professional life who swore blue blazes that something was true when it subsequently turned out not to be. Often, they weren't being wilfully dishonest but simply believed their own spin. BTW I wonder how many of the Mirror readers who tut-tutted at this also blame irresponsible parents for teenage binge drinking. It's a funny old world. The Skin

as a result Davey Cameron, the BNP and the Tory rags have followed suit. They're not opposing it for moral reasons, it's pure politics.

as does the editorial line in the Telegraph and the Mail. Hastings and Alexanders views are still a minority on the Right. To be fair to Brown this is still ostensibly a NATO mission unlike Iraq so just taking the troops home is not that easy without at least the tacit consent if our allies (although I suspect it is a position most Europeans are happy to adopt). He has been lumbered with this mess by Blair who naturally legged it before the...

Lord Sainsbury, Lord Sugar and far far more controversial Lord Drayson. Nice how a few grand donation to Bliar got you a no bid contract worth hundreds of thousands, a seat in the Lords and a government position that enables you to renew that no bid contract.

In this case, the nut wasn't Nutt. Seriously, does anyone know why marijuana *is* such an emotive issue, compared with e.g. tobacco? I do like the comment: "Deaths from alcohol and smoking related diseases might be significantly more than from drugs, but at least we make a lot of money from them. We don’t get a penny from the drug takers.” (On a more serious point, why *not* tax and ...

but that is a battle I consider not worth fighting. Unlike American gays I do not give too much credence to the marriage title. We also swallowed the loss of benefits pretty readily as well, although again, a side issue. What I do question is when were the Houses of Parliament used for marriage before? If I want a civil ceremony/marriage at the Houses of Parliament can I have one?
