I was thinking about doing some situps to help tighten my abdomen, but I seem to have read or heard somewhere that sit ups are not really that good for your back. anyone know if this his true or have any advice?

aside from crunches (various crunches to hit all the abs), you'll need core exercises and a lot of aerobics. Ab exercises won't burn away your fat on the abdominal area all that much. You'll need a lot of work and patience especially since the abs is the last muscle group to show any results. You'll sooner get better chest and arms than getting better abs.

That is true. You're better off doing abdominal crunches.
