Dell Windows 7 upgrade assistant...
Published (2009-12-08 07:35:00)
Here is a link to the other windows 7 upgrade fault that was fixed by use of low resolution mode. In this case the upgrade assistant ran but locked up at the final boot. http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19305991/19595196.aspx#19595196 In this case the problem was windows 7 incorrectly detecting the display capabilities, and using VGA mode in the windows startup options overcame...

In that case, there is not any "more information" to click on. It stops, that's all - no explanation, nothing else - it is said in the box that Windows will search for a solution, but nothing is coming then. There was no difference at all between the 3 machines at the beginning. Differences occured after one month use by different people. The machine having problem had the Intel Fortran compiler installed, MS Office 2003...

Windows 7 installation on a 1721
Published (2009-11-29 16:01:00)
I have a 1720 and it is running Windows 7 with no problems or issues. I would think that the 1721 would have no issues either. Go to Microsoft and download the upgrade advisor and it will tell you if you can run it.

Thanks a lot for the info rsmeeton . I'll try that if we get no (further (or helpful)) response from Dell, because I'm quite eager to get Windows 7 installed on my machine, since I've been EXTREMELY unhappy with Vista... I'm not so fond of having to go to that website for drivers though , because I never really manage to get all the correct ones (and it's quite tedious really). But thank you for the link anyway - I...

Dell Windows 7 Pro - Recovery...
Published (2009-11-29 16:02:00)
Windows 7 is just like windows vista... the install image contains all the versions of windows on one disc, and your cd or computer key is the actual thing that tells windows what version you are supposed to have... thus some things would not be installed and others would.. however with all this in mind, the actual image should not be more then 3.6ish gigs for windows and even Dells stuff shouldn't take more then a gig or so unless you...

Dell Windows 7 Pro - Recovery...

It is the red Dell Windows 7 Recovery Disc that came with the laptop. I made an image prior to burning and the image came out to 5.74GB. Then I stopped because I don't have any dual layer discs. Maybe the OEM disc has more information / programs on it than a retail / MSDN.

Windows 7 installation on a 1721
Published (2009-11-29 11:19:00)
Hi All, I wanted to see if anyone has installed windows 7 on a inspiron 1721. Were there any issues with drivers? Dell's website does not list the 1721 as a candidate for an upgrade to windows 7. Any help would be appreciated.

Vostro 420 and Windows 7
Published (2009-11-30 23:26:00)
I tried updating my BIOS (still at 1.0.2) with a bootable USB stick (Windows 98 DOS) and it always hangs, it doesn't matter if I'm trying to upgrade to 1.0.4 or 1.2.0, it stops after "Invoke the exe file!" followed by a few carriage returns, after I press "Y". How did you create your USB drive? Mine is Kingston DataTraveler, 8GB, formatted with FAT32 and Windows 98 DOS.

I think you need to format with NTFS format boot from maybe a newer version windows. I just upgraded my Netbook from Win XP 32 bit to Win 7 32 bit using a 4gB HP USB FLASH drive, after I made an ISO bootable image from my win 7 install disk. I created the bootable USB FLASH drive from Win7 64 bit, using "unetbootin-windows-377.exe" to load the ISO file to the USB FLASH drive and "uiso9_pe.exe" to make the...

I have been having the same problem today. A couple of days ago, I was able to update my Inspiron desktop to the 1.2.0009 version. It downloaded and installed no problem. Today I tried to do the same with 3 brand new Inspiron 1440 laptops. I get the message that a new update is available and click yes and then it opens quick and closes. Does anybody have any ideas what the issue is. i am ...

Though I'd be less bias and against Dell here (as I'm currently loving the Dell laptop I have now), I too am receiving the same problems and would really appreciate it if some help was done about it. Please, could someone try to resolve this - as I'm looking forwards to upgrading to Windows 7, but the fact it crashes before the installation even starts is really quite a large hold-back.
My ...

Welcome to the forums
Since it doesn't show up in the program list, it would be worth downloading/installing/trying to get rid of it using a program I've been recommending quite a lot lately, to others with similar problems - namely Revo Uninstaller (which is FREEware).
If the Dell Support Center doesn't show up in its list of installed programs either, fear not!...

Hi again UrbaneGorilla
Doesn’t sound like you are getting the right Tech person in your communication with Dell (not a surprise)
Meanwhile back to your Forum thread:
It may help if you can provide feedback to suggested solutions – often called “things I’ve tried”
Reason I say this is:...

You can simply download and save the drivers individually from the Drivers and Downloads page on support.dell.com to your working PC, move them to a flash drive, then move them over to the Vostro. Just avoid the Dell Download Manager option - it installs a download application on the PC and has caused a fair amount of grief. Just choose the standard browser download option for each ...

I like this idea!
The ratings in Vista are considered to be a joke, but I've read that Windows 7 computes realistic ratings.
